Manager III, Software Development
Job description
About the role
onX is seeking a Software Development Manager to lead the Content Data Platform team, the engineering group responsible for the data infrastructure that puts accurate, current, and complete content on onX's maps. You will own the end-to-end lifecycle of map content, from ingesting hundreds of authoritative sources to conflating multi-source inputs into a canonical truth with per-fact provenance. You will lead a cross-functional team of data engineers and geospatial analysts, working within the Content Engineering organization and reporting to the Director of Engineering. This is a high-impact role at the center of onX's content strategy, operating in a fast-paced environment where ambiguity is part of the job and continuous iteration drives success. You will use the latest tooling, including AI, thoughtfully and responsibly to increase quality, speed, and impact while awakening the adventurer inside everyone through the products you build.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Make great engineers better by supporting your teammates with individual goal-setting, professional development, and mentoring while coaching engineers through structured growth plans and partnering with senior/staff-level ICs to set technical direction for the team.
- Deliver the platform by collaborating with the Data Engineering team to drive delivery of the Content Foundation roadmap, extending our unified data ingestion platform to all content types, proving fact-level provenance on land ownership data at a national scale, and establishing versioned data contracts with downstream consumers.
- Build great teams by working closely with your peers to hire smart, creative, and kind engineers and building a healthy team culture where ownership and collaboration are the norm.
- Drive cross-team convergence by partnering with the Data & Analytics EM to converge on shared Lakehouse infrastructure, a shared metadata and lineage platform, a unified analytics infrastructure, and consistent environment patterns across teams.
- Own operational excellence by establishing and maintaining production reliability practices, including SLO definition, monitoring, and alerting, incident management, on-call sustainability, and postmortem culture for a platform that directly affects the accuracy of maps used by millions of hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
- Embed quality as a platform constraint by driving a shift-left approach to data quality, including schema contracts enforced at ingestion, registration with metadata store, automated validation gates before data reaches downstream consumers, and SLOs tied to data freshness and completeness.
- Translate and communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, aligning priorities, surfacing risks, and ensuring clear understanding of tradeoffs across the organization.
- Partner with geospatial domain experts and data analysts to ensure that the content data pipeline meets the needs of each onX vertical, including Hunt, Offroad, Backcountry, and Fish, adapting as each stage of maturity evolves.
- Define and track quality metrics for content accuracy and completeness, establishing feedback loops with customers and internal teams to continuously improve the map experience.
- Champion an experimentation mindset by enabling the team to test new ingestion techniques, conflation strategies, and delivery patterns using safe, controlled experiments that validate impact at scale.
- Leverage AI and modern tooling responsibly to automate repetitive tasks, enhance data validation, and improve developer productivity without compromising data integrity or governance.
- Serve as a technical leader for the content data ecosystem, ensuring that decisions balance delivery speed with long-term maintainability, scalability, and robustness.
Requirements

- You have experience managing software engineers in a matrixed environment, balancing priorities across multiple teams and stakeholders.
- You have a strong background in data engineering or geospatial data concepts, including ingestion pipelines, metadata management, and data quality practices.
- You have experience delivering data platforms that serve multiple downstream consumers with differing needs and SLAs.
- You have a proven track record of mentoring engineers, conducting performance reviews, and supporting professional growth within a high-growth organization.
- You are comfortable making decisions in ambiguous situations and thriving in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving product environment.
- You have experience using modern data tools, including but not limited to SQL, Python, Spark, and cloud-native data platforms.
- You understand the importance of operational excellence and have hands-on experience with monitoring, alerting, and incident response for data platforms.
- You are authorized to work in the United States and do not require authorization from onX to obtain work authorization now or in the future.
Nice to have
- Experience with geospatial data formats and standards such as Shapefiles, GeoJSON, and OGC standards.
- Familiarity with outdoor or mapping domains, including map content workflows for hunting, fishing, or offroad use cases.
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools and prompt engineering for data and platform engineering tasks.
