Director of Design Technology
Job description
About the role
You will set the strategic direction for Nscale's entire design technology stack, ensuring seamless alignment between architectural, structural, MEP, civil, power, and infrastructure disciplines. You will treat BIM models as the single source of truth that generates 3D visualization, 4D construction sequencing, 5D cost intelligence, and the live operational Digital Twin. You will lead the integration of AI into design workflows, pushing computational design to the frontier while establishing the data infrastructure that connects design intent to construction execution and operational performance. This role starts as an individual contributor and will evolve into building and leading an internal design technology team and specialist network. You will author, coordinate, and deliver design data across all programs while embedding safety, quality, and sustainability checkpoints into every model-based workflow. You will define and enforce design technology standards for external architecture and engineering partners, ensuring consistency and quality across the portfolio. You will operate as a visionary practitioner, capable of writing BIM Execution Plans, demoing Digital Twin concepts, and presenting AI-in-design roadmaps within short timeframes.
Key facts
What you'll do
Author, own, and enforce Nscale's BIM Guidelines and project-level BIM Execution Plans across all design and construction programs.
Define model authoring standards, naming conventions, LOD requirements, and file structure protocols across disciplines.
Establish federated model coordination workflows and clash detection cadences across architectural, structural, MEP, civil, and power disciplines.
Own the model-based pipeline that carries design data from authoring through construction handoff and into operational systems without data loss or manual translation.
Own the 4D strategy, linking BIM models to construction schedules for visual sequencing and early conflict identification.
Own the 5D strategy, connecting model elements to cost data for real-time cost intelligence and faster value engineering.
Own Nscale's Digital Twin vision, including the data model, platform architecture, and integration requirements for a hyperscale AI datacenter campus.
Lead the evaluation and pilot of NVIDIA Omniverse as the visualization and simulation layer for Nscale's Digital Twin, including USD-based workflows and real-time data integration.
Own Nscale's AI-in-design strategy, deploying AI-assisted tools for clash detection, generative layout optimization, energy simulation, and code compliance checking.
Own the full design technology stack, including authoring platforms such as Revit, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, and Rhino, as well as coordination tools like Navisworks and BIM 360/ACC.
Embed safety review checkpoints, quality gates, and sustainability analysis directly into model-based workflows.
Define Nscale's design technology requirements for AE firms, including minimum BIM standards, required deliverables, and data handoff protocols, and audit AE model quality throughout design.
Operate initially as a high-performing individual contributor, then build an internal design technology team as portfolio volume and program complexity increase.
Translate complex design technology strategy into clear, actionable standards and communicate effectively to non-technical executive audiences.
Champion continuous improvement of design processes, leveraging data and feedback to refine standards, tools, and workflows over time.
Requirements
5+ years of experience in design technology, BIM management, VDC, or computational design within architecture, engineering, infrastructure, or capital-intensive construction.
Deep, hands-on BIM expertise, including authoring BIM Execution Plans, managing federated model environments, and enforcing BIM standards across multi-discipline AE teams.
Demonstrated experience with 4D construction sequencing and 5D cost modeling linked directly to BIM models.
Working knowledge of Digital Twin concepts, platforms, and integration requirements for connecting design and operations data.
Strong understanding of AI tools applied to design workflows, such as generative design, automated compliance, energy simulation, or LLM-assisted documentation.
Proficiency across major design technology platforms, including Revit, Navisworks, BIM 360/ACC, Civil 3D, and related authoring and coordination tools.
Experience defining and enforcing design technology standards for external AE partners, including contract-level BIM requirements and deliverables.
Strong ability to communicate complex technical strategy to non-technical executive audiences and write clear, actionable standards documents.
Experience working across design, construction, and operations phases with an understanding of data needs in all three environments.
Nice to have
Experience with NVIDIA Omniverse, USD-based workflows, or real-time 3D simulation environments.
Background in datacenter design, mission-critical infrastructure, hyperscale facilities, power generation, or advanced manufacturing.
Experience deploying AI tools in a production design environment, not only evaluating them.
Familiarity with IoT integration, sensor data architecture, and SCADA/BMS systems for Digital Twin data feeds.
Experience with reality capture, photogrammetry, or 3D scanning for as-built model synchronization.
An architecture, engineering, or construction management degree; BIM/VDC certifications such as Autodesk ACP or buildingSMART credentials are a plus.
