This position serves as the primary legal advisor to AI Product and Engineering teams, ensuring that innovation is both fast and legally sound. The role requires interpreting complex regulatory landscapes and translating them into actionable guidance for cross-functional partners building at the frontier of AI. This position balances speed of execution with rigorous risk management in a rapidly evolving environment. What you'll do
The AI Product Counsel will accelerate AI vendor partnerships by collaborating with procurement, security, and product teams to streamline model reviews, procurement evaluations, and contracting workflows. The role provides pragmatic product-oriented legal counsel that enables AI feature teams to iterate and launch quickly while managing risk appropriately. AI Product Counsel monitors global AI regulatory developments and translates them into practical launch requirements and policy guidance for product teams.
The position partners with Sales, Privacy, Security, and Product to answer customer inquiries about Notion AI capabilities, safeguards, and data commitments. The AI Product Counsel builds a repeatable playbook for AI contracting and model review that reduces friction and avoids redundant legal analysis across the business. The role develops in-house expertise in using AI tools to draft legal redlines, summarize risk positions, and maintain updated clause libraries for AI deals.
The AI Product Counsel supports day-to-day product legal needs across the business, stepping in where bandwidth allows to unblock AI and non-AI initiatives. By day 90, the role will establish trusted relationships with AI Product, Engineering, Privacy, Security, Procurement, and GTM to embed legal into the product development process. By the end of year one, the AI Product Counsel becomes the go-to advisor for AI launches, converting fast-moving product, regulatory, and trust issues into clear recommendations and durable guardrails.
Requirements
The AI Product Counsel must hold a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and be admitted to the California bar or eligible to register as in-house counsel in California. The role requires bringing 5 or more years of product counseling experience within a technology company or law firm, with in-house experience strongly preferred.
Candidates must demonstrate a proven track record of advising cross-functional technology teams on AI and ML-powered product development. The position requires possessing experience reviewing and negotiating vendor agreements, identifying risk, and moving efficiently from issues to workable solutions. Strong expertise in AI and data licensing is required, with a history of partnering closely with Privacy and Security teams.
The AI Product Counsel must exhibit sound judgment in situations of ambiguity, clearly articulating trade-offs and keeping product teams moving forward. The role maintains demonstrated curiosity about AI and a commitment to adopting AI tools to improve personal productivity and effectiveness. Developing personal AI fluency is a required part of how the AI Product Counsel performs the responsibilities of this role.
