What you'll do
- Develop sophisticated computational models and devise encoding strategies for electrical stimulation aimed at optimizing neural interfaces.
- Design, execute, and interpret neural recording and stimulation experiments, effectively communicating findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Create and implement comprehensive hardware and software solutions for prosthetic vision applications, which include machine vision algorithms and eye-tracking technologies.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including software engineers, field engineers, and animal specialists, to facilitate and support research sessions.
- Present experimental results and insights in collaborative settings, fostering an environment of shared knowledge and innovation.
- Analyze and interpret complex neural data to inform the design and refinement of BCI systems.
- Engage in iterative design processes to enhance the functionality and usability of next-generation neural devices.
- Participate in the development of novel BCI paradigms that could redefine human interaction with machines.
- Stay current with advancements in neuroscience and related fields to inform your work and contribute to the team's innovative projects.
- Collaborate closely with scientists and engineers to define engineering requirements and ensure alignment with overarching project goals.
Requirements
- A proven track record demonstrating exceptional ability in fields such as neuroscience, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or machine learning.
- A minimum of four years of experience in academic or industry settings related to neural engineering or a closely related field.
- Strong familiarity with the scientific method and fundamental engineering principles.
- Proficiency in Python for data analysis, including the ability to manipulate and visualize complex datasets.
- Experience with experimental design and statistical analysis, particularly in the context of neural data.
- A solid understanding of neural stimulation techniques and their applications.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment while also being able to take initiative and work independently.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with modern statistical inference methods and machine learning techniques, especially in relation to machine vision applications.
- Previous experience with neural stimulation methodologies and their practical applications in research.
- Knowledge of modeling electrical stimulation effects on neural activity, particularly using environments such as NEURON.
- Experience with finite element modeling (FEM) to simulate electric fields and their interactions with biological tissues.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in Python for data analysis and algorithm development.
- Familiarity with machine learning frameworks and libraries, such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
- Experience with data visualization tools to present findings effectively.
- Knowledge of hardware and software integration for biomedical applications.
- Understanding of in-vivo electrophysiology and techniques for awake behaving recordings.
- Capability to design and program experimental instrumentation for neuroscience research.
Practical notes
- The anticipated base salary for this position ranges from $122,000 to $226,000 USD, with actual compensation based on relevant experience and qualifications.
