Key facts
What you'll do
- Construct, evaluate, and calibrate optical and optomechanical systems used in our surgical robots and associated manufacturing processes, ensuring precision and reliability.
- Design and simulate optical imaging systems to enhance the capabilities of robotic surgical tools, improving accuracy and functionality.
- Conduct comprehensive tests on vision systems integrated into robotic platforms, troubleshooting issues and performing routine maintenance to maintain optimal performance.
- Troubleshoot and repair existing optical subassemblies, identifying root causes of failures and implementing effective solutions.
- Verify the quality and performance of optical consumables through rigorous testing procedures, ensuring they meet specifications and standards.
- Develop and implement software solutions for image acquisition, processing, and analysis to support robotic vision systems.
- Perform initial assessments of new imaging technologies, evaluating their suitability for integration into robotic applications and identifying potential improvements.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to identify opportunities for process improvements, system enhancements, and innovative optical solutions.
- Document all procedures, calibration methods, and testing results meticulously, creating standard operating protocols and technical reports for future reference.
- Assist in the development of prototypes and experimental setups, contributing to the iterative design process of optical components and systems.
- Support the integration of optical systems with mechanical and electronic components, ensuring seamless operation within complex robotic platforms.
- Participate in team meetings, providing updates on project progress and contributing ideas for new approaches or technologies.
- Maintain a safe and organized laboratory environment, adhering to safety protocols and best practices for optical and mechanical work.
- Engage in continuous learning about advancements in optical engineering, laser systems, and related fields to bring innovative ideas into the team's projects.
- Assist in preparing technical documentation, presentations, and reports for internal review and potential publication or patent applications.
Requirements
- Fundamental understanding of optical principles, including aberrations, light transmission and reflection, Gaussian beams, and optical alignment techniques.
- Experience working with optical tools such as fiber splicers, power meters, and other visible and infrared optical instruments.
- At least 1 year of experience in optical engineering, with proficiency in simulation and design software such as Zemax or similar optical design tools.
- Hands-on experience of 1+ years assembling, aligning, and testing complex optomechanical systems, demonstrating precision and attention to detail.
- Over 1 year of experience performing benchtop testing and performance evaluation of optical systems, including troubleshooting and calibration.
- Ability to document optical design and testing processes clearly and accurately, maintaining detailed records of procedures and results.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze issues systematically and develop effective solutions.
- Good communication skills, capable of working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and documenting technical work comprehensively.
- Self-motivated with a proactive attitude, eager to learn new skills and contribute to innovative projects.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks efficiently and effectively.
- Willingness to work on-site at our South San Francisco location and travel to Fremont, CA as needed.
Nice to have
- A solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, including mechanics, electronics, and software integration.
- Background in an engineering discipline such as mechanical, electrical, or optical engineering.
- Familiarity with data analysis, image processing, and software development related to optical systems.
- Experience with optics alignment, bench testing, and troubleshooting in a laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of fiber optics fabrication, splicing, and testing techniques.
- Mechanical engineering skills, including proficiency with CAD software for designing optical mounts and mechanical components.
- Experience with optical simulation tools such as CodeV, OSLO, or LightTools to model and optimize optical systems.
- Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and contribute to a multidisciplinary team environment.
Skills & tools
- Willingness to travel to Fremont, CA for work and collaboration.
- Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Google Docs, Gmail, and other productivity tools.
- Experience in developing software for instrument testing, image acquisition, or data analysis is a plus.
- Comfortable working in laboratory environments, including optical labs and vivarium settings.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and documentation efficiently.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to team members and stakeholders.
Practical notes
Hourly Rate: $35 USD
