Machine Learning Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the design and delivery of machine learning systems that decode neural signals to restore movement and sensation for paralyzed individuals. You will partner with neuroscientists and hardware engineers to translate raw neural data into reliable, real-time control of digital interfaces and robotic prosthetics. You will define research questions and production metrics that shape the next generation of brain-computer interface capabilities. You will implement algorithms that not only perform well offline but also operate within strict latency and power constraints on embedded systems. You will communicate findings clearly to cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on usability, safety, and user experience. You will contribute to an open research culture where simple, first-principles solutions are valued over unnecessary complexity. Your work will directly influence how users interact with technology using only their thoughts.
Key facts
What you'll do
Implement and iterate on neural decoding models that enable users to type at target speeds and control external devices with high accuracy.
Design experiments and feature pipelines to process high-dimensional neural recordings and validate performance in real-world scenarios.
Optimize machine learning pipelines for low-latency inference on custom neural interface hardware.
Collaborate with firmware and systems teams to integrate models into production software stacks under strict reliability requirements.
Analyze real-world usage data to identify failure modes and drive improvements to model robustness and user experience.
Define and track key product metrics that inform trade-offs between model complexity, power consumption, and user benefit.
Support hardware roadmap decisions by modeling how algorithmic requirements constrain sensor design and data acquisition strategies.
Lead code reviews and technical documentation to elevate engineering standards across the BCI team.
Prototype novel machine learning approaches in a research setting and assess their practical viability for deployment.
Partner closely with users and stakeholders to prioritize features that meaningfully impact quality of life and usability.
