Product Designer
Job description
About the role
A product designer establishes how humans and AI collaborate to deliver core product foundations. The designer drives end to end outcomes while shaping the future direction of the design organization.
Designers shape how products look and feel. Designers create user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and polished visuals. They test ideas with users and iterate on feedback. Design work spans research, interaction design, and visual design. Collaboration with product and engineering happens daily. Design decisions are judged by outcomes such as usability, conversion, and customer satisfaction. Most design teams keep a living design system to keep products consistent.
Key facts
What you'll do
Solutions surface through joint work with engineers and agent product managers, defining problems, exploring options, and owning measurable outcomes. The design process is accelerated by AI tools that clarify thinking, stress edge cases, and validate concepts rapidly. Customer understanding is built through direct interviews, problem finding, and running fast, precise experiments. Initial concepts move from thought to prototype using code and Figma, with ideas iterated through validation and polish. Strong opinions on tools, prompts, methods, product, and team working challenge assumptions and push direction forward.
Requirements
The posting states a bachelor's degree requirement. Complex work has been designed and shipped, with real tradeoffs made instead of only executing someone else's spec. Ownership drives direction, forms opinions, and delivers work without waiting for permission or perfect information. Communication is crisp, honest, and direct, with writing and presenting tailored to audience and context. Collaboration succeeds across engineering, product, operations, customers, and leadership, maintaining clarity and cohesion. AI fluency guides the design process, with tools applied intentionally to the work.
Nice to haves
Experience building and maintaining design systems is expected. Front-end code proficiency is valued. Experience conducting customer interviews and user research is seen as an advantage.
Practical notes
The role is based in San Francisco and requires an in-office presence. Typical interview steps
Design interviews usually include a portfolio review, a design exercise, and a team conversation. Candidates present past work and explain their process and decisions. Some loops include a live design challenge. Communication matters as much as the visual output. Portfolios are strongest when they show the problem, the constraints, and the iteration, not just the final screens. Interviewers also watch how you take feedback.
Good to know
Design in this role relies on fast cycles between prototyping and real user feedback. AI tools are used to augment creative thinking and testing rather than replace human judgment. Craftsmanship is shown through refinement of first principles, execution quality, and attention to detail. General collaboration across product, engineering, and operations is common. The role focuses on foundational product work in a high impact environment.
Questions to ask
Useful questions for the interview: what a typical week looks like, how work is assigned, what tools the team uses, and how feedback works. Asking how the role has changed recently and what the team wishes it had known when joining is also reasonable. Questions about the manager's priorities are especially valued.
Career growth
Design careers grow from junior to senior, staff, and principal levels. Some designers move into design management or design operations. Specializations include UX research, interaction design, and brand design. Cross-functional influence grows with seniority. Senior designers are expected to influence product strategy, not just execute visuals. Building a habit of user research strengthens any design career.
