What you'll do

Design and implement backend services that power Mozilla's ecosystem products and platforms.

Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code in languages commonly used for server-side development.

Collaborate with frontend engineers, product managers, and designers to define system requirements and technical specifications.

Build and maintain APIs that enable third-party developers to integrate with Mozilla services and platforms.

Optimize existing backend systems for performance, reliability, and scalability across high-traffic workloads.

Participate in code reviews and mentor junior engineers on best practices and coding standards.

Develop monitoring and alerting systems to ensure service health, uptime, and fast incident detection.

Contribute to architectural decisions that shape the long-term direction of ecosystem infrastructure and tooling.

Work with data engineering teams to ensure backend systems handle data pipelines and processing effectively.

Troubleshoot production issues and lead incident response efforts when services are impacted or degraded.

Document system designs, operational procedures, and runbooks for internal teams and external stakeholders.

Evaluate new technologies and tools that could improve the backend architecture and developer experience.

Partner with security teams to ensure backend systems follow best practices for data protection.

Drive technical initiatives that improve developer productivity and the overall health of the ecosystem.

Lead migration efforts to modernize legacy backend components and improve overall system reliability.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

5 or more years of professional experience building backend systems and distributed services.

Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language such as Python, Rust, or Go.

Experience designing and deploying RESTful APIs and microservices architectures in production environments.

Familiarity with cloud platforms and containerized deployment workflows using orchestration tools.

Solid understanding of database systems including relational databases and NoSQL options.

Experience with version control systems and collaborative software development practices across distributed teams.

Ability to work independently and communicate effectively in a fully remote team environment.

Demonstrated experience with testing strategies including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing for backend services.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex technical problems systematically.

Nice to have

Experience contributing to open-source projects, particularly those related to web technologies and browser infrastructure.

Knowledge of Mozilla's existing technology stack, product portfolio, and community-driven development model.

Familiarity with security best practices for backend systems, authentication, and data protection.

Experience mentoring senior engineers and leading technical initiatives across multiple teams.

Understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles for web-based products and services.
