About the role
Mozilla is seeking a Staff Design Engineer to join the AI Product team, where this role sits at the intersection of design and engineering, focusing on building user-facing artificial intelligence features within Mozilla's product ecosystem. The position is fully remote, allowing collaboration across distributed teams while contributing to Mozilla's mission of keeping the internet open and accessible, and the Staff Design Engineer will lead technical design decisions and help shape how AI capabilities are integrated into Mozilla's products. This individual will work closely with researchers, product managers, and engineers to bring AI innovations from concept to production, owning outcomes from initial exploration through shipped features, and will have the opportunity to influence the direction of AI features that reach millions of users worldwide while contributing to Mozilla's open-source culture.

What you'll do
Partner with product managers and researchers to define AI-driven features for Mozilla products and align them with user needs
Translate high-level design concepts into working prototypes and production-quality implementation code that ships to users
Lead the technical exploration of new AI technologies and assess their fit for Mozilla's product goals and roadmap
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, design, and research stakeholders to ship AI features on schedule
Own the implementation of design systems and components that support AI-powered interfaces across Mozilla's product family
Mentor junior engineers and designers on best practices for AI product development and design-engineering workflows
Conduct user research and usability testing to validate AI feature designs with real users and gather actionable feedback
Iterate on AI-powered workflows based on user feedback, performance data, and accessibility requirements from diverse user groups
Write clear documentation for AI features, including design rationale, technical architecture, and usage guides for internal teams
Represent Mozilla's AI product vision in external forums, conferences, and community discussions to share learnings and gather insights
Requirements
Demonstrated experience in design engineering or a closely related technical design role within a product organization, ideally in consumer software
Strong understanding of artificial intelligence concepts and their practical application to consumer-facing products and services
Proficiency in front-end technologies and modern web frameworks for building responsive and accessible user interfaces
Experience building and shipping AI or machine learning features in a product environment with measurable outcomes
Ability to work independently and drive technical decisions in a remote setting with minimal supervision
Excellent communication skills for collaborating with diverse, distributed, and cross-functional teams across multiple time zones
A portfolio or body of work showing design-engineering projects delivered at scale with real user impact
Familiarity with Mozilla's mission and product landscape is valued in this role and will be considered

Experience with large language models or generative AI systems in production environments at scale
Background in open-source contribution or community-driven software development practices, values, and governance
Knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design practices for building global audience-facing products
Familiarity with privacy-preserving AI techniques, on-device inference, federated learning, and differential privacy approaches
Skills & tools
Front-end web technologies including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks for building, testing, and iterating on user interfaces
AI and machine learning model integration, training pipelines, and deployment workflows in product environments
Design tools for rapid prototyping and user interface development and iteration with real users
Version control systems and collaborative code review practices within distributed engineering teams
Cloud-based development environments and remote collaboration platforms for asynchronous work across time zones
Performance optimization techniques for AI-powered user interfaces and responsive applications at scale, ensuring smooth user experiences
