About the role
You will own the execution of detailed engineering calculations and analysis tasks that form the backbone of structural integrity for our projects. You will be responsible for supporting the planning, design, and analysis of structural systems for a diverse portfolio that includes buildings, infrastructure, and other complex structures. This role requires you to own the collection and analysis of project data, ensuring that all findings are translated into accurate and compliant documentation. You will own the preparation of design calculations, drawings, and technical specifications under the guidance of senior engineering staff. You will own the execution of field inspections and the observation of construction activities to verify that the built environment aligns with the design intent. This position owns the responsibility of troubleshooting on-site issues and providing construction engineering support to contractors to resolve discrepancies efficiently. You will own collaboration efforts with multidisciplinary teams, contributing your insights to develop solutions that prioritize safety, functionality, and sustainability. This role is designed for early-career ownership, where you will build a strong technical foundation while developing vital project management and client-facing abilities.

What you'll do
Perform detailed engineering calculations and analyses to determine structural dimensions and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards.
Conduct field inspections to assess construction progress and verify that work adheres to design documents and quality benchmarks.
Collect and interpret project data to inform design decisions and validate the structural performance of materials and systems.
Prepare comprehensive reports and documentation that communicate engineering findings and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
Support the preparation of design drawings and technical specifications, maintaining accuracy and clarity for construction teams.
Provide construction engineering support on-site to troubleshoot issues and ensure design intent is implemented correctly in the field.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate structural solutions with architectural, mechanical, and electrical systems.
Assist in the development of innovative project solutions that enhance safety, functionality, and sustainability across the project lifecycle.
Contribute to the implementation of sustainable practices by analyzing structural systems and recommending efficient use of resources.
Engage directly with clients and project partners to gather requirements and provide clear updates on project status and technical details.
Apply engineering principles to evaluate loads, stresses, and forces, ensuring all structural elements perform as intended under various conditions.
Support the preparation and review of construction documents, ensuring all deliverables meet regulatory requirements and client expectations.
Requirements
Must be currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science program in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Structural Engineering.
Must possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Must be authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship for an employment visa for this position now.
Must be able to start within 30 days of receiving a formal offer.
Must be able to work onsite in our Chicago, Illinois headquarters office.
Must be able to commit to working a minimum of 20 hours per week during the academic term and 40 hours per week during summer and holiday breaks.
Must be eligible to earn academic credit for this internship through an accredited post-secondary educational institution.
Must be entering your junior or senior year of study or be a graduate within the last 12 months of the posting date.
Nice to have
Experience with structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, or similar engineering tools.
Familiarity with relevant design codes such as ACI 318, AISC 360, or ASCE 7.
Basic knowledge of construction materials, including steel, concrete, and timber, and their respective behaviors.
Understanding of sustainable design principles and their application in structural engineering projects.
Previous exposure to infrastructure projects, such as bridges, highways, or utility systems.

This is an onsite role.
This internship requires a minimum term of 6 months.
