Senior Manager, Autonomy Safety

About the role

The Senior Manager, Autonomy Safety leads the end-to-end safety strategy and lifecycle management for May Mobility's autonomous vehicle programs. Based on the company's mission to transform cities through autonomous technology, this role owns the development, implementation, and oversight of safety processes aligned with ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO 8800, and UL 4600 standards. The hire will define how safety requirements are broken down, validated, and assured across vehicle behaviors and system aggregation. What you'll do

• Define the strategy for ensuring safe autonomous system development, deployment, and maintenance referencing ISO 8800, ISO 21448, and AV industry best practices.
• Set the strategy for systematically decomposing operational design domain components and driving behavior components, and validate them in aggregate and on a per-behavior level.
• Collaborate with software, data science, and systems engineering teams to ensure May Mobility safely trains new machine learning models to solve complex problems.
• Establish safety standards for prototyping, testing, and deploying new AI solutions, and develop assurance plans for test datasets.
• Work with cross-functional teams to define safety strategies and launch targets for vehicle behaviors and aggregate safety performance using SPI metrics.
• Create and confirm detailed functional safety cases according to UL4600 and ISO26262, including scheduling to support company product launches.
• Own and manage the safety plan and ensure that required artifacts and schedules are met throughout the development lifecycle.
• Train and coach the development team through every aspect of the safety plan using appropriate processes and methods.
• Communicate with all required stakeholders to align on safety expectations, resolve issues, and maintain transparent reporting.
• Drive continuous improvement by monitoring industry standards and incorporating updates into May Mobility's safety processes.
• Champion safety culture across engineering, data science, and operations to ensure consistent execution.
• Support regulatory and customer engagements by providing technical safety insights and documentation.
• Lead risk assessment activities and guide mitigation strategies for identified safety concerns.

Requirements

Candidates must have a strong background in autonomous vehicle safety engineering and system development lifecycle. Demonstrated experience with ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO 8800, and UL 4600 is required. Must possess the ability to interpret and apply safety standards to real-world autonomous driving scenarios. Should have experience developing safety strategies for machine learning models in autonomous systems. Must be capable of leading a team of safety engineers through mentorship and structured development processes. Should have a proven track record of creating functional safety cases and assurance plans for complex systems. Must be able to manage multiple priorities and deliver safety artifacts on schedule in a fast-paced environment. Should have strong communication skills to convey technical safety concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
