About the role
Marqeta is on the lookout for a legal expert to provide guidance on product innovation and regulatory adherence within the payments sector. This position will involve navigating intricate projects and addressing legal challenges related to financial products, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Deliver specialized legal advice regarding the regulations and laws that govern prepaid, debit, and credit card products, including but not limited to EFTA/Regulation E, Durbin/Regulation II, and TILA/Regulation Z, as well as card network standards.
- Provide legal insights on payment legislation, financial services regulations, consumer protection laws, and enforcement actions relevant to both existing and forthcoming product features.
- Assess legal risks associated with product initiatives, recommend strategies for risk mitigation, and collaborate with product, engineering, risk, and go-to-market teams to uphold the integrity of Marqeta's financial platform.
- Monitor and analyze new regulations emerging in the payments and financial services landscape to evaluate their implications for Marqeta's offerings.
- Work closely with internal teams, sponsor banks, and clients to support the launch of new products, features, and marketing campaigns.
- Oversee relationships with external legal counsel to ensure alignment and compliance with legal standards.
- Participate in cross-functional meetings to provide legal perspectives on product strategy and development.
- Draft and review legal documents, contracts, and compliance materials to ensure they meet regulatory requirements.
- Conduct training sessions for internal teams on relevant legal topics and compliance matters.
- Stay informed about industry trends and changes in the regulatory environment to proactively address potential legal issues.
- Collaborate with compliance officers to ensure adherence to internal policies and external regulations.
- Support the development of internal policies and procedures that align with legal requirements and best practices.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree with active membership in a State Bar.
- At least 5 years of legal experience, preferably in-house within a fintech or banking environment, or at a reputable law firm, focusing on prepaid, debit, or credit card products.
- In-depth knowledge of the payments industry, including the legal and regulatory frameworks applicable to banks and other ecosystem participants such as issuer processors and program managers.
- Proven track record of managing complex projects autonomously and collaboratively, with the ability to meet tight deadlines in a dynamic setting.
- Strong business insight with a pragmatic approach to risk management, effectively balancing legal risk with business goals.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities, capable of working independently and collaboratively, while influencing decisions.
- Aptitude for engaging in constructive discussions and respectfully challenging viewpoints.
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to swiftly assess issues, evaluate potential solutions, and empower both oneself and team members.

- Familiarity with issuer processing and program management within the payments ecosystem.
- Previous experience working with regulatory bodies or in compliance roles.
- Understanding of international payment regulations and their implications for U.S.-based operations.

- National Tier: $188,800 - $236,000
- Premium Tier: $204,600 - $255,800
- Premium Plus Tier: $220,400 - $275,500
- Eligibility for annual bonuses.
