About the role
You will own the end-to-end product design process for a specific product area within Mark43's public safety platform, conducting user research, synthesizing insights, and translating findings into high-fidelity design solutions. You will act as the primary design authority for your product line, defining the vision and guiding the solution from initial discovery through launch and post-launch iteration. This role requires you to collaborate deeply with product managers and engineers to ensure designs are feasible, valuable, and aligned with business goals. You will champion the user's voice within the organization, advocating for their needs in every design decision. Your work will directly impact the safety and effectiveness of first responders in the field. You will be responsible for simplifying complex workflows and creating intuitive, accessible, and responsive interfaces for high-stress environments.

What you'll do
Facilitate cross-functional design workshops to align stakeholders and define product requirements for new features.
Conduct contextual inquiry and user interviews with law enforcement personnel, emergency medical services, and 911 dispatchers to uncover latent needs.
Translate complex public safety workflows into clear, actionable, and user-centered design specifications and interaction models.
Develop wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups using industry-standard tools to communicate design intent clearly.
Perform competitive analysis and market research to identify emerging trends and best practices in public safety software.
Partner with product managers to define and prioritize the product roadmap based on user needs, technical constraints, and business objectives.
Lead usability testing sessions to validate design concepts and iterate on solutions based on qualitative and quantitative feedback.
Collaborate with front-end engineers to ensure design implementations match the intended user experience across all platforms.
Define and maintain design system components and patterns to ensure consistency and efficiency across the product suite.
Analyze product usage data to identify friction points and opportunities for improving the user experience.
Present design rationale and trade-offs to executive leadership and technical teams to secure alignment and support.
Mentor junior designers by providing constructive feedback and guidance on design process and execution.
Own the design deliverables for your product area, ensuring timely delivery without compromising the quality of the user experience.
Contribute to the development of the overall product design strategy in alignment with the company's long-term vision.
Explore the application of emerging technologies such as AI and machine learning to enhance public safety workflows and decision-making.
Requirements
Must have 7+ years of professional product design experience in software or related fields.
Must possess 3+ years of experience designing complex enterprise SaaS products for mission-critical workflows.
Must have demonstrable experience leading both qualitative and quantitative user research methods.
Must have a proven track record of end-to-end design, from discovery through launch and iteration.
Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and constantly evolving work environment.
Must be authorized to work for any employer in the country of the role location and unable to sponsor work visas.
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills to articulate design decisions to diverse audiences.
Must be highly organized and capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
Must be comfortable working autonomously and taking ownership of your work without direct supervision.
Must have a strong understanding of user-centered design principles and accessibility best practices.
Must be proficient in design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or similar industry-standard platforms.
Must have a portfolio that demonstrates your ability to design for complex domains and enterprise users.
Must be willing to travel occasionally for user research or stakeholder meetings as needed.
Must be able to interpret and apply legal, regulatory, and compliance requirements within the design process.
Nice to have
Experience working within law-enforcement, fire, or emergency medical services software domains.
Experience co-designing solutions directly with customers and stakeholders during the discovery phase.
Experience designing features that support situational awareness and high-stress decision-making.
Demonstrated excellence in visual design, interaction design, and presentation skills.
Understanding of native iOS and Android application design patterns and constraints.
Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and how these technologies can be integrated into product workflows.
Experience contributing to the maintenance and evolution of a design system at scale.
Knowledge of public safety standards, data models, and interoperability considerations.
Experience with mapping and geospatial interactions within digital interfaces.
Experience conducting remote user research and usability testing.
