Lead Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
Mark43 is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to advance the capabilities of our Universal Search platform. This role is responsible for architecting and scaling the systems that deliver fast, accurate, and secure data access to public safety users. The position requires deep technical leadership across service boundaries and a commitment to raising the standard for distributed systems in a high-stakes environment. This is a remote, full-time position with a competitive compensation range of $180,000 to $230,000 per year. You will own the technical strategy for our search and data integration initiatives, defining how complex systems evolve to meet stringent performance and reliability targets.
You will architect scalable integrations for Records Management Systems (RMS), Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), and analytics platforms, ensuring these critical public safety systems operate in harmony. You will coordinate long-term platform decisions, balancing immediate delivery needs against the long-term health of the codebase and infrastructure. A key part of your role will involve mapping data pathways and defining extensibility rules so that third-party data sources can be integrated safely without hindering delivery speed. You will oversee search request designs, review service contracts, and provide actionable feedback to elevate indexing and retrieval resilience across the platform. Leading complex, multi-team release orchestration will be central to your work, as you manage dependencies and rollout strategies to ensure public safety systems remain reliable and performant at all times. You will drive the end-to-end lifecycle of permission-aware global search, guiding the feature from initial discovery and design through implementation, rollout, and post-launch refinement based on real-world feedback.
You will also mentor engineers, coach teammates through difficult technical challenges, and sustain high code quality across distributed components that serve mission-critical workflows. When incidents arise, you will diagnose failures in live systems, lead root cause analysis, and improve observability to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future. In addition, you will author integration standards that balance speed, security, and maintainability, ensuring the platform can evolve without sacrificing robustness or compliance. This position demands a high degree of ownership, as you will be accountable for both the technical direction and the operational excellence of the search and data infrastructure.
