Senior Software Development Engineer, HD Maps

Within this company, the HD Maps team leads the charge in geospatial big-data analytics, deriving insights for key market segments and product lines. Our responsibility involves deploying GIS algorithmic stages into scalable production cloud environments, utilizing infrastructure such as AWS and Spark. We own the end-to-end lifecycle of Mapbox's award-winning high-precision maps ("HD Maps"), serving critical needs in ADAS, AV, and Non-Automotive GIS data sectors. This work encompasses data analysis, system architecture, and comprehensive evaluations of compute, storage, cost, and performance.
Role Expectations
In this capacity as a Senior Software Development Engineer, you will drive the full lifecycle of algorithmic components within cloud-based mapping systems.
You will architect, specify, and construct the product roadmap for data processing stages embedded in cloud applications. Your daily work involves coding and developing these stages using Python, SQL, AWS, and Spark, with an uncompromising focus on scalability. Collaboration is integral; you will partner with multiple R&D teams to integrate analytics seamlessly into mapping and navigation products. Alignment with strategic objectives is achieved through close cooperation with engineering leadership. also, you will engage directly with forward-thinking customers to refine requirements and validate solutions.
Core Competencies
Success in this role demands expert proficiency in at least one programming language, specifically Python, Scala, or Java, coupled with a firm grasp of software engineering principles. You bring extensive experience in designing and building large-scale data processing applications and pipelines, primarily on AWS or equivalent cloud platforms. Your mastery of SQL extends to query optimization, execution planning, and the complexities of big data processing.
You possess a deep understanding of distributed computing concepts and have hands-on experience with frameworks like Spark. You design and maintain reliable data workflows, though your current role does not center on specific scheduling platforms. You excel at making architectural and technical decisions, carefully weighing scalability, reliability, and maintainability. Your analytical mindset drives complex technical initiatives to successful conclusions, while your excellent communication skills enable effective collaboration across cross-functional teams. Fluent English, both written and spoken, is essential.
Additional Desirable Traits
While not mandatory, prior experience in the mapping, navigation, or automotive sectors provides valuable context. Knowledge of machine learning techniques for geospatial data analysis further enhances your contributions.
