Software Development Engineer II, Navigation, Traffic

About the role

Mapbox is seeking a Software Development Engineer II for the Navigation, Traffic team to own the end to end lifecycle of the services that power navigation use cases across consumer, automotive, and logistics markets. The role owns the design, implementation, and operation of the web services that ingest, process, and serve traffic telemetry and map matching logic at global scale. You will be responsible for balancing the rapid development of new navigation features against the reliability and performance of our services as request volumes and data complexity increase. This position requires thoughtful integration of AI into engineering workflows to improve how we design, develop, and debug systems. The successful hire will collaborate closely with cross functional partners to turn ambiguous problems into well scoped solutions that are delivered with high quality and operational excellence.

What you'll do

Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and other engineers to identify and scope well defined tasks for the navigation traffic backend.

Execute against defined scope by writing, testing, and deploying code that is robust across diverse geographies, road networks, and traffic conditions.

Design and implement microservices using Python and TypeScript (backend) that keep pace with the rapid growth of Mapbox's customer base and new use cases.

Leverage AWS services including CDK, ECS, Step Functions, Lambda, and S3 to build scalable and resilient navigation workflows.

Diagnose complex system behavior caused by global traffic patterns and unexpected data interactions, and drive investigations to resolution.

Facilitate continuous delivery pipelines and infrastructure improvements that accelerate feature velocity while maintaining high reliability.

Promote a culture of operational excellence by writing comprehensive documentation, monitoring system health, and being available on call to support production services.

Reduce technical debt by refactoring critical paths, sharing knowledge through documentation, and mentoring teammates to improve overall team performance.

Uphold a culture of collaboration, transparency, creativity, inclusion, and data driven decision making in all interactions with stakeholders.

Invest in the team's health and happiness by optimizing application performance and ensuring that solutions are maintainable, testable, and observable.

Requirements

5+ years of experience building scalable high volume low latency backend services that power navigation or location based workloads.

Proficiency in the tech stack required for this role, including Python, TypeScript (backend), and AWS (CDK, ECS, Step Functions, Lambda, S3).

Familiarity with code versioning tools, such as GitHub, and understanding of branching strategies and pull request workflows.

Able to perform independently across the full development lifecycle, translating designs and specifications into production ready code.

Self starter who communicates clearly, is outcomes oriented, and takes ownership of technical decisions and tradeoffs.

An empirical analytical approach, including the ability to develop strong hypotheses, conduct spikes, and communicate findings to both technical and non technical audiences.

A commitment to writing high quality code by authoring unit tests, proactively remediating defects, and following through to ensure solutions are stable in production.

Nice to have

Experience and knowledge within the navigation domain, including map matching, routing, and traffic modeling.

Experience with Amazon Elasticache for caching performance critical navigation workloads.

Experience with SQL for managing structured data and complex queries.

Experience with Big Data and ML workflows to process and analyze telemetry at scale.

Experience with various security standards and associated technical knowledge to ensure compliance and data protection.
