Software Development Engineer II
Job description
About the role
You will own complex Mapbox Studio features from concept to production, driving the evolution of our flagship design tool through hands-on execution. This role demands fluent JavaScript and TypeScript craftsmanship to navigate ambitious product goals and deliver robust solutions daily. You will lead contributions to a complex React and Redux application, requiring fluency in modern web technologies to ship performant and testable code that users rely on. You will champion AI integration in engineering routines, rigorously auditing outputs for security and performance validity to ensure safe adoption. Establishing rigorous testing standards is critical to safeguard service reliability and streamline on-call duties for the team. You will streamline map designer toolsets by building workflow automation that accelerates creative iteration cycles and removes manual bottlenecks. Optimizing application performance metrics while mentoring peers toward sustainable coding practices is a core responsibility that impacts the entire studio. Conducting design critique sessions translates user needs into clear technical specifications for frontend and backend, aligning implementation with product intent. You will maintain documentation that clarifies system behavior and assists future debugging efforts across teams, ensuring knowledge continuity.
Key Facts
What you'll do
You will architect scalable map editing modules using modern React patterns for resilient user workflows that adapt to complex mapping scenarios. Designing intuitive interface flows is essential to help cartographers build maps quickly with minimal friction and a clear mental model. You will champion AI integration in engineering routines, auditing outputs for security and performance validity before any production deployment. Establishing rigorous testing standards is critical to safeguard service reliability and streamline on-call duties through comprehensive validation strategies. You will streamline map designer toolsets by building workflow automation that accelerates creative iteration cycles and reduces repetitive manual steps. Optimizing application performance metrics while mentoring peers toward sustainable coding practices is a core responsibility that ensures long-term maintainability. Conducting design critique sessions translates user needs into clear technical specifications for frontend and backend, bridging product vision and implementation details. You will maintain documentation that clarifies system behavior and assists future debugging efforts across teams, reducing context loss during transitions. You will utilize Playwright or Jest to validate functionality and guard against performance regressions with automated checks and monitoring. Monitoring system health, diagnosing regressions, and resolving customer-facing issues promptly is essential to maintain trust and reliability.
Requirements
You must demonstrate advanced React and Redux proficiency building intricate client-side interfaces that handle complex state interactions. The ability to design complex application and component states using solutions like Redux is mandatory for managing map editing workflows. You need three or more years constructing high-volume backend services with strong CI/CD pipeline ownership to support studio operations. You should understand memory management techniques ensuring snappy rendering in data-heavy mapping contexts where performance is critical. You have to audit AI-generated code for security gaps and architectural soundness before integration to protect the codebase. Experience consuming RESTful services within cloud environments, focusing on AWS components, is required for backend integration. You must utilize Playwright or Jest to validate functionality and guard against performance regressions as part of quality standards. Monitoring system health, diagnosing regressions, and resolving customer-facing issues promptly is essential for operational excellence.
You must have practical experience with geospatial technologies as a core requirement for this role in studio contexts. Prior work with web mapping technologies or geospatial data visualization enriches solution thinking for spatial challenges and informs design decisions. You should demonstrate mastery of modern frontend architecture for large-scale, data-intensive applications, with a focus on memory management and rendering efficiency. Proficiency using AI as a sounding board and productivity multiplier is required, maintaining a trust-but-verify approach to auditing AI-generated code for security, performance, and architectural integrity. You must take pride in the long-term health of your systems, including monitoring metrics, triaging regressions, and proactively resolving customer-facing issues to reduce downtime. The ability to independently navigate the full development lifecycle, translating design specifications into high-quality, production-ready code, is expected for this position. A collaborative mindset is crucial; you should mentor peers, engage in pair programming, and document your expertise to elevate the entire engineering team.
