Staff System Engineer - ADAS/AD Safety

About the role

In this position, you will lead the development of functional safety and Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF) strategies for our advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving features. Your responsibilities will include creating a safety case framework, defining essential processes, and establishing the technical standards that will guide our vehicle architecture as we expand.

What you'll do

• Collaborate closely with the Functional Safety team to ensure alignment on Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA) and establish Safety Goals for both ADAS and automated driving features.
• Develop and document Technical Safety Concepts and requirements, ensuring proper distribution across sensors, Electronic Control Units (ECUs), software, and vehicle networks.
• Integrate SOTIF methodologies into the safety case, focusing on performance limits and edge cases related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and perception systems.
• Design a comprehensive safety case framework that includes the structure, evidence model, and argumentation style necessary for effective communication.
• Convert overarching safety objectives into specific claims and supporting evidence utilizing Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) or similar methodologies.
• Act as the technical authority on safety-related topics during design reviews, change control processes, and release gates.
• Create and maintain a Safety Management System alongside internal governance structures to ensure compliance and best practices.
• Conduct regular assessments and updates of safety documentation to reflect the latest developments in technology and regulatory requirements.
• Mentor and guide junior engineers in safety practices and methodologies, fostering a culture of safety within the team.
• Engage with cross-functional teams to ensure safety considerations are integrated throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Prepare and present safety case documentation to stakeholders, including technical teams and executive leadership, to facilitate informed decision-making.
• Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in safety standards to continuously enhance our safety practices.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or System Engineering is essential.
• A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in safety assurance, functional safety, or system safety, particularly within the fields of robotics, ADAS, or autonomous systems.
• Demonstrated experience managing at least one complete safety lifecycle from initial concept through to production.
• Practical experience in constructing and maintaining safety cases, including the formulation of arguments and supporting evidence.
• In-depth knowledge of ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), and UL 4600 standards.
• Familiarity with safety analysis techniques such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), and System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA).
• Strong communication skills to effectively convey complex safety trade-offs to both technical teams and leadership.
• Excellent systems thinking abilities, enabling you to connect high-level risk concepts with technical execution.

Nice to have

• A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or System Engineering is preferred.
• At least 6 years of experience if holding a Master's degree, or 3 years with a PhD.
• Experience with multi-sensor systems, including lidar, radar, cameras, ultrasonic sensors, IMU/GNSS, and high-definition maps.
• Direct experience in managing a safety case aligned with UL 4600 standards.
• Knowledge of ISO-8800 and safety considerations for AI/ML, including Operational Design Domain (ODD) and Operational Safety Domain (OSD) concepts as well as data pipeline safety.
• A background in dynamic startup environments or involvement in launching new product lines.
• Experience interacting with external audits, regulatory bodies, or certification organizations.

Skills & tools

• Proficient in ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), UL 4600, and ISO-8800 standards.
• Experienced in safety analysis techniques such as HARA, FMEA, FTA, and STPA.
• Familiarity with Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) or equivalent methodologies.
• Knowledge of AI/ML safety and perception monitoring techniques.
