About the role
The Sr. Robotics Maintenance Engineer owns the end to end reliability and performance of robotic painting and sealing systems within the high throughput paint shop environment. This role owns the deep technical execution of robot trajectory validation, parameter tuning, and application quality alignment to meet Lucid's uncompromising quality and sustainability targets. You will own the cross functional collaboration necessary to integrate automation capabilities with production throughput, quality standards, and regulatory compliance. This position owns the design support, lifecycle optimization, and continuous improvement of robotic cells in support of Lucid's "Compromise Nothing" vehicle architecture. You will directly supervise and develop a team of maintenance technicians to ensure maximum uptime and consistent application performance. The role requires a commitment to operational excellence, safety leadership, and the hands on execution of advanced robotic systems within a demanding automotive manufacturing setting. You will shape the future of mobility by ensuring that automation delivers repeatable, sustainable, and premium finish quality at scale.

What you'll do
- Supervise and lead a team of electrical maintenance technicians assigned to the paint shop robotics activities as fellows, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
- Design robot trajectories, flow logic, and application parameters for various painting operations such as primer, basecoat, and clear coat using OEM specific programming languages including ABB RAPID, FANUC PaintTool, and Dürr EcoRPC.
- Utilize advanced simulation tools like Siemens Process Simulate, Visual Components, or RobCAD for path generation, cycle time validation, and digital twin modeling to pre validate changes before physical implementation.
- Perform paint parameter tuning including shaping air, atomizing air, fan width, bell speed, and fluid delivery rate to meet transfer efficiency and surface quality targets while supporting sustainability goals.
- Lead or support robotic cell integration with conveyors, paint mix rooms, applicators, atomizers, color changers, and environmental control systems to ensure seamless production line operation.
- Collaborate with OEM partners such as Dürr, Eisenmann, ABB, FANUC, and Staubli during design reviews, Factory Acceptance Tests, Site Acceptance Tests, and on site commissioning activities.
- Validate robot communication with PLCs, safety systems including light curtains and emergency stops, and fieldbus protocols such as ProfiNet, Ethernet/IP, and DeviceNet to ensure robust and safe automation.
- Analyze paint application results including orange peel, DOI, runs, mottling, and overspray, then iteratively refine robot paths and settings to achieve defect free finishes.
- Apply detailed knowledge of air flow, booth balancing, and paint chemistry to support environmental conditions that enable Class A finishes without defects.
- Collaborate with quality engineers to correlate robot performance with surface appearance metrics and actively participate in defect analysis for issues such as fish eyes, craters, and sagging.
- Develop and maintain interlock matrices, robot zone maps, safety rated speed settings, and teach pendant protocols to ensure compliance with ISO 10218, ANSI/RIA R15.06, and CE standards.
- Ensure integration of safety controls, vision systems, and process sensors to support consistent quality, traceability, and operational excellence across robotic paint cells.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum of five years of experience in robotic systems maintenance, programming, or integration within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience with industrial robotic platforms from OEMs such as ABB, FANUC, KUKA, or Yaskawa, including programming and troubleshooting.
- Proven ability to read and interpret technical schematics, wiring diagrams, and robot programs to diagnose and resolve complex system issues.
- Strong understanding of paint shop processes, environmental control, and application quality requirements in the automotive industry.
- Hands on experience with simulation software such as Siemens Process Simulate, Visual Components, or RobCAD for robot cell design and validation.
- Knowledge of safety standards and implementation practices for industrial robots including ISO 10218 and collaborative robotic applications.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills to effectively manage technicians, coordinate with cross functional partners, and represent maintenance activities in operational reviews.
- Ability to work on site at the King Abdullah Economic City manufacturing location with flexibility to support global initiatives as required.
Nice to have
- Experience with Dürr EcoRPC, ABB RAPID, or FANUC PaintTool programming in automotive paint shop environments.
- Prior involvement in Factory Acceptance Testing or Site Acceptance Testing with OEM equipment suppliers.
- Familiarity with advanced process control systems and digital twin methodologies for continuous improvement.
