Maintenance Automation Sr. Engineer
Lucid Motors seeks a Maintenance Automation Sr. Engineer to lead the development and sustainment of advanced automation within a high-volume automotive paint shop. This role is responsible for the full lifecycle of robotic, PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems across pre-treatment, e-coat, primer, basecoat, clearcoat, ovens, and final inspection. You will ensure these systems operate with high performance, uptime, quality, and safety.
The position requires deep collaboration with maintenance, controls, quality, and production teams. Your work will directly support the company's commitment to excellence and innovation in mobility. Position Overview
The Maintenance Automation Sr. Engineer translates process requirements into robust control systems. You will architect solutions that balance speed with safety. The role involves owning end-to-end delivery for automation projects in the paint shop environment.
You will design control strategies for robotic cells used in pretreatment and curing ovens. Programming of PLC and HMI logic will be conducted using Siemens TIA Portal or Beckhoff platforms. Optimization of robot paths for ABB IRB5500 and Fanuc R-2000iC workcells will be a core responsibility.
Commissioning new paint line automation includes validating I/O and safety interlocks. You will lead FAT and SAT activities and support production ramp-up. Integration of automation data with MES, QMS, and traceability databases is essential. Deployment of OPC-UA and MQTT solutions will enable IoT monitoring across facilities.
Monitoring KPIs such as FTQ and overspray will drive continuous improvement. You will analyze data to reduce energy and material consumption. Predictive maintenance strategies will be developed using historical automation data.
Key Responsibilities
Designing control strategies for robotic and automated systems in paint booths, sealer areas, and utilities. Developing, modifying, and optimizing PLC logic using Siemens S7, TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley, and Beckhoff platforms. Programming and refining robot paths for ABB IRB5500, Fanuc R-2000iC, KUKA KR series, and Dürr EcoRP.
Designing and integrating HMI/SCADA interfaces for alarms, diagnostics, and real-time data visualization. Leading automation commissioning for new installations, upgrades, and expansions in the paint shop. Supporting FAT, SAT, I/O validation, safety interlock testing, and functional verification.
Optimizing takt time, cycle time, and line balancing during ramp-up phases. Integrating automation systems with MES, QMS, SCADA, and traceability platforms. Supporting vision systems for defect detection and robotic path correction. Deploying and maintaining OPC-UA/MQTT and IoT-based monitoring systems.
Analyzing KPIs such as FTQ, uptime, overspray, paint usage, and rework rates. Implementing automation-driven improvements to reduce energy and material consumption. Developing predictive maintenance strategies using historical automation data. Ensuring compliance with CE, ISO 13849, OSHA, NFPA 79, and other safety standards.
Conducting risk assessments and updating safety circuits using Pilz, Siemens, and SICK components. Implementing poka-yoke systems to prevent errors and enhance quality. Supporting audits and certifications related to paint operations and automation. Creating and maintaining electrical and pneumatic schematics in EPLAN, PLC/HMI backups, FMEA reports, and robot backups.
Requirements
You hold a Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field. You bring 3 to 5 years of experience in automation or controls. You have programmed industrial robots and PLC-based systems previously. You understand safety standards such as ISO 13849 and OSHA requirements.
You can read electrical schematics and create documentation in EPLAN. Knowledge of paint shop automation environments is a strong advantage. Experience with Dürr EcoRP systems is valued.
