About the role
LivePerson is a global conversational AI company that connects brands with consumers through intelligent messaging experiences. They are currently seeking a Software Development Engineer at the mid-level to join their distributed engineering team working remotely from Bulgaria. In this role, you will take ownership of significant software components within LivePerson's platform, contributing to the architecture and implementation of features that power real-time conversations between businesses and their customers. You will collaborate with senior engineers and product stakeholders to translate requirements into reliable, scalable solutions that meet the needs of enterprise clients worldwide. This position demands strong technical fundamentals, a self-directed approach to problem solving, and a genuine interest in building systems that handle high volumes of conversational data.

What you'll do
Design and implement scalable backend services that form the backbone of LivePerson's conversational messaging platform.
Write clean, well-tested code in modern programming languages to deliver production-ready features on schedule.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, and fellow engineers during feature planning sessions.
Participate in thorough code reviews to maintain high code quality and share engineering knowledge across the organization.
Debug and resolve complex technical issues that arise in distributed systems and real-time messaging infrastructure.
Contribute to architectural decisions that shape the long-term direction and capabilities of LivePerson's platform.
Write and maintain clear technical documentation to support onboarding of new team members and ongoing development.
Optimize existing systems for improved performance, reliability, and scalability as the user base continues to grow.
Mentor junior engineers by sharing best practices and providing constructive feedback during pair programming sessions.
Participate actively in agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, daily standups, and retrospectives with your team.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience.
Three to five years of professional software development experience building and shipping production-grade applications.
Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Java, Python, or JavaScript.
Solid experience working with RESTful APIs and designing backend services that process real-time data streams.
Familiarity with cloud computing platforms and the process of deploying applications in containerized environments.
Deep understanding of core data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design principles applied to large systems.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage your own priorities within a remote, asynchronous team environment.
Comfortable navigating the complete software development lifecycle from initial requirements gathering through deployment and ongoing monitoring.
Nice to have
Experience with messaging protocols and real-time communication frameworks such as WebSockets or XMPP is valuable.
Familiarity with machine learning concepts and their practical application within conversational AI and chatbot systems.
Previous contributions to open-source projects or a demonstrated track record of technical writing and blogging.
Knowledge of event-driven architectures and message queue systems like Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ would be advantageous.
Skills & tools
Java or Python used extensively for backend service development and building robust API endpoints.
JavaScript or TypeScript applied when building interactive front-end components that integrate with the messaging platform.
Git serves as the primary version control system for collaborative code management across distributed engineering teams.
Docker and Kubernetes are used for containerizing applications and orchestrating microservices in production environments.
Amazon Web Services or comparable cloud infrastructure supports the deployment and auto-scaling of LivePerson's applications.
Relational databases like PostgreSQL alongside NoSQL stores such as MongoDB or Amazon DynamoDB for data persistence.
Practical notes
This is a fully remote position, and candidates must have a dedicated home office setup with stable, high-speed internet connectivity while located in Bulgaria or a compatible time zone.
LivePerson follows a hybrid agile development approach, which includes regular team sync meetings that may require some overlap with US-based working hours for effective collaboration.
