Narrative Designer
Job description
About the Role
The Narrative Designer at Jam City will own the text and tone of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, acting as the primary architect for the game's written universe. In this capacity, you will transform high-level creative concepts into fully realized narrative scenes that unfold seamlessly within the mobile environment. Your written work will directly dictate player interaction, crafting moments that resonate emotionally and drive meaningful engagement over time. This position is specifically for a storyteller who thrives on creative challenges and excels within a highly collaborative team environment. To ensure suitability for the specialized creative demands, qualified candidates must successfully complete a dedicated Harry Potter Narrative Design and Writing assessment. This role is based exclusively in our San Francisco office, requiring a consistent five-day onsite presence to facilitate close collaboration.
What You'll Do
You will craft the opening content that introduces players to the complex magic systems while simultaneously guiding new players through the fundamental mechanics of play. Your writing will map intricate emotional arcs across story chapters, ensuring that every narrative moment aligns perfectly with the intended gameplay timing and player progression. You will partner closely with engineering teams to integrate branching dialogue systems seamlessly into the application's technical structure without compromising the story. Shaping distinct character voices is essential, as you will give each professor and classmate a unique identity through their specific dialogue patterns and vocabulary. Maintaining strict lore consistency with the established rules of the Harry Potter universe is critical across all game updates, expansions, and future content. You will coordinate directly with audio leads to synchronize written lines with voice recordings and in-game cues to ensure a cohesive sensory experience. Based on iterative test feedback, you will revise scenes to optimize pacing and clarity specifically for the constraints and nuances of mobile screen sessions. During creative sprints, you will guide fellow writers, helping them generate content that meets strict design goals while ensuring progress is never hindered by ambiguity. The role involves supporting time-sensitive live events by producing urgent copy that adheres strictly to brand standards and narrative integrity. You will champion narrative quality across the team, actively elevating standards for clarity, tone, and readability in all written communication.
Requirements
Applicants must possess a minimum of three years of professional experience designing stories for games or comparable interactive media platforms. Superior written English skills are mandatory, with the demonstrated flexibility to adapt tone for a diverse array of characters and situational contexts. Successful candidates must be available for full-time employment in San Francisco or be willing to relocate to meet this requirement without delay. You must manage multiple concurrent writing projects while tracking intricate plots, detailed character information, and version history with a high degree of precision and organization. An understanding of how stories serve gameplay mechanics is vital, ensuring that your written work complements and enhances interactive features effectively. Prior experience specifically on Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is preferred, as it provides familiarity with the game's specific tone, systems, and established narrative framework. Effective communication with engineers, producers, and artists is necessary to ensure the smooth integration of your work into the final product. You must be capable of completing a specialized Harry Potter Narrative Design/Writing assessment as part of the evaluation process.
