Software Engineer II
Job description
About the role
You will own the design and delivery of core developer platform capabilities that shape how Iterable engineers build, test, and ship services at scale. You will take ownership of medium-complexity initiatives that directly improve the reliability, performance, and usability of our internal build and deployment systems. This role requires you to act as a hands-on contributor while exercising judgment in prioritizing work that balances speed, quality, and long-term maintainability. You will collaborate closely with product engineering teams to translate recurring developer challenges into durable platform solutions. You will also play a key role in defining and evolving engineering best practices that raise the bar for how we use AI-assisted tools in production-grade development. Your work will have direct impact on the productivity and effectiveness of hundreds of engineers across the Iterable codebase.
Key facts
What you'll do
Assess and refine the foundational systems that Scala engineers rely on to compile, test, and validate their changes with confidence.
Champion the evolution of shared libraries, frameworks, and build patterns that multiple product teams depend on across the organization.
Drive improvements to the CI infrastructure to reduce feedback cycles, increase reliability, and maintain release quality at production scale.
Identify recurring developer pain points and design durable platform tools, documentation, and automation that make the paved path the easy path.
Leverage AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude, and agentic workflows to accelerate complex platform work and automate repetitive tasks.
Partner with service teams to understand their needs, support adoption of platform improvements, and ensure solutions remain practical and scalable.
Apply modern AI engineering practices to make development workflows faster, safer, and more repeatable across the Iterable developer experience.
Contribute directly to the Bazel build platform and core Scala libraries that power services running in production around the world.
Shape how Iterable adopts and governs AI-assisted and agentic engineering practices to increase developer impact and codebase maintainability.
Act as a strong technical collaborator, communicating clearly with both platform and product engineers to align on goals and tradeoffs.
Represent the Developer Platform Team in cross-functional discussions to ensure platform decisions reflect real product and operational needs.
Continuously learn and deepen expertise in Scala, Java, Kotlin, and related technologies to keep platform solutions robust and future-focused.
Mentor and influence engineering practices by sharing knowledge through code reviews, design discussions, and documentation.
Balance independent execution with cross-team collaboration to deliver measurable improvements to developer productivity and system reliability.
Requirements
Demonstrate strong software engineering fundamentals with proven ability in Scala, Java, Kotlin, or another production-level language.
Read, modify, test, and review code in a large, multi-language codebase with comfort and discipline.
Experience building and maintaining tools, libraries, or platforms that other engineers depend on in production environments.
Comfort working directly with build systems such as Bazel and understanding how developer workflows scale across large codebases.
Solid understanding of CI concepts and practical experience improving build, test, and deployment pipelines.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate ambiguous developer pain into clear, actionable platform solutions.
Effective written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams and documenting technical decisions.
A demonstrated growth mindset and eagerness to learn new technologies, patterns, and best practices in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Nice to have
Prior experience contributing to open source projects or building tools used by multiple teams.
Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows and agentic tooling in a production engineering context.
Experience contributing to or optimizing large-scale CI systems in technology companies.
