What you'll do
- Lead and mentor a team of FX artists, providing guidance on best practices and creative solutions to achieve project goals.
- Oversee the development and optimization of the visual effects pipeline, ensuring that it is efficient, scalable, and adaptable to various project needs.
- Collaborate with directors, producers, and other department leads to establish the visual style and technical requirements for each project.
- Develop and implement new techniques and tools to enhance the quality and efficiency of visual effects production.
- Review and critique the work of FX artists, providing constructive feedback to help them improve their skills and output.
- Manage project timelines and deliverables, ensuring that all visual effects are completed on schedule and to the highest standards.
- Troubleshoot technical issues that arise during production, providing solutions that keep the workflow moving smoothly.
- Stay up to date with industry trends and advancements in visual effects technology, integrating new tools and techniques into the team's workflow.
- Facilitate communication between departments to ensure that visual effects are seamlessly integrated with other elements of the production.
- Participate in the hiring process for new team members, helping to build a strong and diverse FX team.
- Conduct training sessions and workshops to enhance the team's skills and knowledge in visual effects techniques and software.
- Contribute to the overall creative vision of projects, ensuring that visual effects enhance storytelling and resonate with audiences.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in visual effects production, with a strong focus on FX simulation and dynamics.
- Proven experience in a leadership role, with the ability to inspire and guide a team of artists.
- Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Houdini, Maya, and Nuke, with a strong understanding of particle systems, fluid dynamics, and other simulation techniques.
- Solid understanding of the visual effects pipeline and the integration of FX with other departments, such as lighting and compositing.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively convey ideas and feedback to team members and stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Experience with real-time rendering engines such as Unreal Engine or Unity.
- Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python or MEL for tool development and automation.
- Previous experience in a feature film or high-end television production environment.
- Knowledge of traditional art principles and how they apply to digital effects.
- A passion for storytelling and a keen eye for detail in visual aesthetics.
Skills & tools
- Expertise in FX simulation and dynamics using Houdini and Maya.
- Strong understanding of compositing techniques and software, particularly Nuke.
- Familiarity with rendering techniques and optimization for both offline and real-time workflows.
- Experience with version control systems and project management tools to streamline team collaboration.
- Ability to adapt to new software and technologies as they emerge in the industry.
