About the role
You will architect and deliver robust mechanical solutions for high-volume industrial applications, owning the complete lifecycle of enclosure designs from initial concept to high-volume production. This role demands a deep commitment to first principles engineering, where you will deconstruct complex problems into fundamental truths and build scalable, manufacturable outcomes. You will serve as the primary mechanical owner for a critical portfolio of power conversion hardware, ensuring designs meet stringent real-world demands. Collaboration will be central to your daily work as you interface with mechanical, electrical, test, and manufacturing engineers to align on system-level goals. You will leverage hands-on prototyping and testing to validate designs, de-risk technical challenges, and accelerate iteration in a fast-paced startup environment. Your expertise will directly influence the reliability, cost, and manufacturability of products that enable the large-scale integration of renewables and storage onto the grid. You will drive decisions that balance performance, durability, and production efficiency from the design phase forward.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design mass-manufacturable parts and assemblies for large industrial enclosures, structural plastics, electrical insulators, seals, welded joints, riveted joints, bolted joints, and adhesive joints.
- Own parts and assemblies from initial concept to high-volume production, coordinating across disciplines and external partners.
- Design with a first principles approach, optimizing parts through analysis such as structural and tolerance analysis.
- Create 3D designs and 2D drawings using CATIA V6/3DX to define detailed geometry and specifications.
- Perform hands-on work such as prototyping and testing to validate designs and refine solutions.
- Collaborate with different engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, test, and reliability teams, as well as external partners and suppliers.
- Apply rigorous problem-solving to address challenges in materials, manufacturing processes, and integration.
- Ensure designs support efficient manufacturing, quality, and scalability for high-volume production environments.
- Evaluate and specify materials, coatings, and joining methods to meet environmental, electrical, and mechanical requirements.
- Support the development of enclosure solutions that meet or exceed ingress protection ratings and sealing performance.
- Contribute to design for manufacturing and design for reliability practices, including participation in DFMEA activities.
- Assist in the selection and specification of components such as connectors, fasteners, and seals for enclosure systems.
- Document design decisions, trade studies, and validation results to support product development and compliance.
- Partner with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and support high-volume processes like sheet metal forming, injection molding, and welding.
Requirements
You must possess a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or a similar discipline as the foundational requirement for this role. A minimum of 5+ years of full-time industry experience designing outdoor-rated industrial enclosures for electromechanical parts or assemblies is mandatory. You must also bring 5+ years of full-time industry experience working with 3D CAD, with bonus consideration for experience using CATIA V6/3DX. A strong grasp of engineering fundamentals is essential, including a basic understanding of electronics to enable effective cross-functional collaboration. You must have hands-on experience with high volume manufacturing and key processes such as sheet metal bending, stamping, injection molding, diecasting, extruding, fastening, riveting, welding, and dispensing. Demonstrated experience with ingress ratings and seals is required to ensure designs meet environmental and protection standards. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to work effectively with diverse teams and external partners. You must be able to work independently with strong ownership while also thriving as part of a collaborative team. Strong problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail are non-negotiable for success in this role.

- Experience with paintings and coatings for aesthetic and environmental protection.
- Experience with composites for lightweight or high-strength applications.
- Experience with PCBAs, connectors, fuses, and other electronic components within enclosure systems.
- Experience with FEA, CFD, multi-physics modeling, or associated software such as Ansys, MATLAB, Python, Simulink, or StarCCM.
- Experience with GD&T and tolerance analysis to ensure manufacturability and fit.
- Experience with reliability and validation testing, as well as DFMEA methodologies.
- Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) and controlled release processes for managing design iterations.
- Experience with medium voltage products, such as converters, switchgear, circuit breakers, insulation, and shielding in grid applications.

This role is based in Scotts Valley and operates as a full-time position. The compensation package includes competitive salary and equity, with a specified salary range from $120,000 to $190,000 per year, reflecting the scope and impact of the position. Successful candidates will join a dynamic, collaborative environment driven by innovation and first principles thinking. The work requires hands-on engagement with prototyping and testing, along with strong written and verbal communication to align cross-functional teams. You will be expected to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced startup while maintaining rigorous attention to detail and ownership of deliverables.
