Staff Engineer, Operations Technology
Job description
About the role
Staff Backend Engineer, Food Systems
Menu Operations
We are seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join the Ingredient to Product tribe at HelloFresh. This high-impact individual contributor role operates at the intersection of Food Systems and Backend Engineering. You will act as the technical bridge that identifies business and technical gaps, working with business leads to transform requirements into scalable production systems and solutions. You will partner across squads within the Food Systems alliance to ensure end-to-end menu operational efficiencies, elevate the technical bar, and accelerate the tribe's capacity to deliver value to our customers.
This position is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The engagement is a fixed-term Staff Engineer role with continuous performance review. The annual compensation is $168,000 CAD. The role follows a Flexible Hybrid work policy, balancing remote work flexibility with in-office collaboration.
What you'll do
You will design, build, and own robust, scalable infrastructure for menu operations, playing a key role in ensuring a successful xPS migration in the US market. You will translate needs from Food Systems business leads into scalable engineering solutions, raising reliability and velocity for both customers and internal teams. You will define and drive best practices for model serving, APIs, and system design across multiple squads. You will lead cross-squad technical initiatives, guiding decisions from architecture through hands-on implementation. You will partner with internal engineering teams to ensure production services remain performant, observable, and maintainable. You will contribute to tribe-wide engineering standards and help shape the technical roadmap over time. You will mentor and support engineers across squads without direct line management responsibility.
What you'll bring
You bring 8+ years of backend engineering experience, with a strong foundation in Python, Kotlin, and GoLang. You have a proven track record of making architectural decisions for large-scale distributed systems and integrations with applications and user interfaces. You possess advanced experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native architectures, including production operations at scale. You have a deep understanding of distributed systems, APIs, and microservices architecture. You demonstrate a strong track record of working across team boundaries to deliver complex, cross-functional projects. You have meaningful experience using AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot as part of your regular workflow. You favor a collaborative, low-ego approach with strong technical judgment.
What we offer

You will receive a Box Discount, including 75% discount on weekly HelloFresh and Chefs Plate meal kits and 50% off weekly Factor meal boxes. Vacation and Paid Time Off are offered to support work-life balance. Family Benefits include a parental leave top-up program for expectant parents.
