Backend Engineer, Operations Technology

About the role

This role owns the design, development, and maintenance of scalable and reliable back-end services that power critical forecasting and planning operations for HelloFresh globally. You will lead the strategic migration of essential monolithic functions into a resilient microservices architecture, ensuring high availability and performance for distribution center workflows. The position involves close collaboration with a globally distributed team of developers, designers, and product owners to solve complex e-commerce and supply chain challenges related to how people eat. You will analyze system performance to identify bottlenecks and implement optimizations specifically for pricing and operational planning services. In this capacity, you will contribute to high-impact architectural decisions that define the future direction of our solution design. Additionally, you will mentor junior engineers by conducting code reviews and promoting best practices in software development, testing, and deployment. All other duties, as assigned.

What you'll do

• Architect and build scalable, reliable back-end services using modern distributed architecture principles and microservices patterns.
• Drive the migration strategy for moving critical business functions from a legacy monolithic application to a robust microservices framework.
• Lead the refactoring of legacy codebases to improve maintainability, scalability, and overall system performance.
• Conduct in-depth code reviews to ensure code quality, security, and adherence to engineering best practices across the team.
• Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior engineers to help them grow their skills and impact within the engineering organization.
• Investigate and resolve complex system performance issues to eliminate bottlenecks in production services.
• Optimize algorithms and data processing pipelines to ensure optimal efficiency and reliability of pricing services.
• Monitor system health and reliability metrics, implementing proactive improvements to prevent service disruptions.
• Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies to recommend and apply relevant advancements to the team's technology stack.
• Participate in cross-functional architectural discussions to guide solution design and long-term technical strategy.
• Collaborate with product owners and stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical specifications.
• Implement solutions that enhance the user journey, making it easier for customers to purchase amazing food through improved digital experiences.
• Develop software that keeps distribution centers running smoothly and efficiently through stable backend operations.
• Document technical designs and system processes to ensure knowledge sharing and continuity within the team.

Requirements

• Demonstrate extensive experience as a software engineer with a strong focus on back-end development and system architecture.
• Show proficiency in back-end technologies and programming languages such as Python, SQL, and Go.
• Possess a deep understanding of distributed systems principles and microservices architecture patterns.
• Have hands-on experience migrating applications from monolithic architectures to microservices environments.
• Exhibit strong problem-solving capabilities and technical leadership during complex implementation projects.
• Display familiarity with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Show competence with container orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes for deploying services at scale.
• Have solid experience working within Agile development methodologies and frameworks.
• Adaptability to changing priorities and the ability to deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines is essential.
• Communicate effectively using strong verbal and written skills for articulating complex technical concepts.
• Collaborate successfully with cross-functional teams including product, design, and operations stakeholders.
• Hold the right to work and live in Canada without sponsorship requirements for this position.
