About the role

Brightline is seeking a Full Stack Ruby on Rails Principal Software Engineer to drive technical direction across our platform and deepen our domain expertise in healthcare workflows. You will own the technical strategy for complex, cross-cutting systems while ensuring that the codebase remains simple and enjoyable for the entire team. You will define standards, solve hard problems, and mentor engineers to elevate the quality of our work. This role requires you to build deep expertise in behavioral health workflows and advocate for both provider and member experience. You will collaborate closely with product, design, and clinical teams to turn complex requirements into elegant, production-ready solutions.

What you'll do

• Drive collaboration on technical direction for complex, cross-cutting systems involving data modeling, API design, clinical workflow architecture, and integration patterns.
• Scope and shape work end-to-end by identifying the right problem, collaborating closely with product and design, and defining what "done" looks like for each initiative.
• Write high-quality code across the entire stack, including Ruby and Rails on the backend and Turbo with Tailwind on the frontend, focusing on abstractions that enable other engineers.
• Evaluate technical risk and tradeoffs clearly, making thoughtful decisions about when to invest in architecture and when to ship the simplest thing that works.
• Mentor and elevate the engineering team through architecture discussions, pairing sessions, constructive code review, and setting high standards without gatekeeping.
• Build deep domain expertise in behavioral health to challenge product assumptions, surface risks early, and advocate for a positive provider and member experience.
• Collaborate across engineering, product, design, and clinical/operations teams to ensure that technical decisions align with business and clinical goals.
• Leverage modern frontend tools such as Turbo, Tailwind, ViewComponent, Stimulus, and Typescript to build beautiful, responsive user interfaces.
• Contribute to our mobile strategy by working with Hotwire Native to leverage existing web infrastructure for native applications.
• Influence engineering culture by raising the bar through your work, feedback, and proactive improvements that benefit the entire team.

Requirements

• You are excited about improving behavioral health for children, teens, and their families.
• You have significant professional experience developing software, primarily with Ruby and Rails, with a track record of influencing technical direction beyond your own codebase.
• You shape how the team thinks about systems by seeing how individual features connect to broader architecture and articulating tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• You own problems, not just tickets, digging into the domain, questioning assumptions, and finding the right solution even when it is not obvious.
• You are thoughtful and empathetic in decision making, execution, communication, and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Healthcare experience, especially in clinical workflows, scheduling systems, EHR integrations, insurance billing, or multi-clinic operations.
• Experience with complex data modeling and migration challenges, including unifying systems and managing domain complexity.
• Strong background in API development and integrating with third-party systems.
• Experience working in Shape Up or similar appetite-based development methodologies.
