Full Stack Ruby on Rails Software Engineer (Senior
Job description
About the role
You will partner with product and design to conceive and deliver features that directly impact how children, teens, and their families access and experience mental health care. You will take ownership of complex initiatives that span discovery, implementation, and long term operation across our web and mobile platforms. A core part of this role involves collaborating closely with clinical and billing teams to ensure our technology supports compliant, high quality care delivery. You will be responsible for shaping technical standards and architecture decisions that keep our stack simple, maintainable, and enjoyable for the entire team. This position gives you the opportunity to influence data flows, integrations, and user experiences that are central to our mission. You will continuously refine processes and code quality so that we can ship features to production quickly and safely. Finally, you will mentor and inspire other engineers, bringing fresh perspectives that help the entire team grow and improve.
Key facts
What you'll do
Collaborate on projects end-to-end with a strong emphasis on backend systems, API design, and integrations while scoping features with product and design to ship a finished feature into production.
Write code across the entire stack, primarily using Ruby and Rails on the backend along with Turbo and Tailwind on the frontend, and be comfortable leaning on Hotwire Native for mobile interactions.
Balance heads-down implementation work with pairing sessions, adjusting your approach based on project needs and your energy levels to maintain sustainable pace.
Curate a healthy codebase by participating in architecture discussions, expanding automated testing, and providing thoughtful code review to keep long term quality high.
Bring a new perspective that helps our team continue to grow and improve through knowledge sharing, experimentation, and constructive feedback.
Own the full lifecycle of features, including discovery, implementation, verification, and ongoing maintenance in production environments.
Work closely with clinical, billing, and product stakeholders to translate requirements into robust technical solutions that meet regulatory and operational needs.
Contribute to system reliability, performance, and scalability as we evolve our data pipelines and infrastructure to support increasing demand.
Explore opportunities to simplify user workflows by leveraging Turbo, ViewComponent, Stimulus, and Tailwind to build beautiful, responsive interfaces.
Apply pragmatic engineering judgment to decide when to extend the stack with tools like React, while defaulting to approaches that keep the system straightforward and maintainable.
Requirements
You are excited about improving behavioral health for children, teens, and their families and want your technical work to directly support that mission.
You love collaborating with team members from other departments, including product, marketing, clinical, and more, to build solutions that serve real user needs.
You own projects and see them through from initial scoping through deployment and post launch improvements, even when responsibilities extend beyond pure coding tasks.
You are thoughtful and empathetic in how you carry yourself, from decision making and execution to communication and collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders.
You care about solving problems and are not tied to particular solutions or technologies, allowing you to adapt to new challenges and constraints.
You have experience developing software professionally, primarily with Ruby and Rails, and are comfortable working in similar languages and frameworks such as Python and Django.
You enjoy full stack work but prefer focusing on back end logic, data modeling, and system architecture that underpins reliable features.
You communicate clearly and constructively, ensuring that technical tradeoffs are well understood by both technical and non-technical partners.
You are proactive about learning, teaching, and raising the technical bar for the team through code reviews, discussions, and shared best practices.
Nice to have
Experience with healthcare related work, especially around insurance billing, health system integrations, clinical workflows, referrals, or coaching.
Experience with API development and integrating with third party services and systems.
