Staff Data Scientist
Job description
About the Role
As a Staff Data Scientist for Commercial GTM at Headway, you will own the data science strategy for Headway's commercial business end-to-end. You will report directly into the Payer data team and co-create a data science roadmap with the Chief Commercial Officer to drive growth and operational excellence. You will spend the majority of your time partnering with Headway's most important accounts to uncover opportunities and mitigate risk at scale. You will translate complex analytical findings into clear, executable recommendations for executive stakeholders across the organization. This role requires you to serve as both a technical mentor and a quality benchmark for other data scientists working on commercial problems. You will enable self-service analytics by building durable assets that allow partners to explore data with confidence. Ultimately, you will own the success of data science initiatives tied to commercial agreements and their impact on the bottom line.

- Act as a watchtower for key metrics across all commercial agreements, surfacing risks and opportunities early.
- Enable self-service analytics by establishing clear definitions, dashboards, and durable analytical assets for the commercial team.
- Serve as the technical lead and mentor for other data scientists working on commercial projects, elevating rigor and standards.
- Translate complex analytical findings into clear, actionable recommendations tailored for executive stakeholders.
- Partner closely with Commercial, Payer, Finance, Product, and Operations leadership to define problems and validate solutions.
- Design and implement forecasting and causal inference models while guarding against common failure modes.
- Champion the adoption of AI-assisted tools to automate and accelerate data workflows and insight generation.
- Ensure that data models and transformations, ideally using dbt, support reliable and scalable analytical workflows.
Requirements
- Bring 10+ years of experience in data science or analytics roles, demonstrating deep methodological rigor.
- Maintain strong executive presence and advanced stakeholder management skills to build trust with senior leadership.
- Show significant go-to-market experience or a demonstrated eagerness to develop deep expertise in this domain.
- Prove a track record of cross-functional collaboration with Commercial, Payer, Finance, Product, and Operations teams.
- Exhibit mastery of forecasting and causal inference, including understanding common failure modes and mitigation strategies.
- Demonstrate expert fluency in SQL and strong proficiency in Python or R for building analytical workflows.
- Have experience building reliable, reusable data pipelines and models, ideally using modern tools like dbt.
- Show a history of influencing executive decisions through clear recommendations and measurable business outcomes.
- Commit to working fully remote within the specified engagement model on a full-time basis.
Why This Role Is Exciting

About Headway
1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but most providers don't accept insurance, making therapy too expensive for most people. Headway's mission is to fix this by building a new mental healthcare system everyone can access. We started by solving the biggest barrier to care: insurance. The admin work - credentialing, claims, payment reconciliation - is a nightmare. We've automated that.
But we're going further. Over 75,000 providers across all 50 states run their practice on our software, serving over 1 million patients. We are building the best tools for therapists to run their entire practice, reimagining the experience of finding a therapist, and investing in the platform foundations to enable this at scale. We aren't just a billing layer; we are becoming the platform where care actually happens.
We're a Series D company with $325M+ in funding (a16z, Accel, Spark Capital, etc.), looking for exceptional people to help us achieve this mission. We want your time here to be the most meaningful experience of your career. Join us, and help change mental healthcare for the better.
Diversity and Inclusion
We believe a team's strength is in its people, and we cannot achieve this mission without a team that reflects the diversity of this problem - across race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, national origin, religion, family status, disability, military status, and experience. Headway is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, Headway will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided with reasonable accommodations. If reasonable accommodation is needed to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and/or
