About the role
Bamboohr is seeking an Underwriter specializing in War & Terrorism insurance to join their team across multiple locations in the United States. This full-time position involves evaluating risks associated with war, terrorism, and related perils for commercial and specialty insurance accounts, requiring careful analysis of policy terms, exposure accumulation, and underwriting guidelines to ensure proper risk selection and portfolio balance. The successful candidate will work closely with brokers and internal teams to support underwriting decisions for complex accounts, contributing directly to the growth and profitability of the underwriting book. The Underwriter reports to a senior underwriting manager and is part of a dedicated team focused on specialty lines of business.

What you'll do
Review and assess war and terrorism risk submissions received from brokers and agents.
Analyze exposure data and financial information to determine appropriate coverage limits and pricing structures.
Apply underwriting guidelines and company policies to evaluate new business and renewal accounts thoroughly.
Collaborate with senior underwriters to structure complex treaty and facultative placements for diverse clients.
Monitor accumulation of exposure across territories, lines of business, and account portfolios regularly.
Prepare detailed underwriting recommendations and present findings to account management and distribution teams.
Maintain current knowledge of war and terrorism insurance market conditions and emerging trends.
Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and internal control procedures during daily operations.
Participate in account reviews and contribute meaningfully to portfolio strategy and growth discussions.
Document all underwriting decisions with clear rationale, supporting analysis, and proper file notes.
Coordinate with claims teams to understand loss trends and incorporate findings into future underwriting decisions.
Support the distribution channel by providing timely underwriting feedback and capacity availability updates to brokers.
Requirements
Demonstrated experience in property or specialty insurance underwriting functions and related business processes.
Strong understanding of war, terrorism, and related insurance coverage forms, clauses, and endorsements.
Ability to analyze large volumes of risk data and financial information with accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for client-facing and internal team interactions on a regular basis.
Proficiency with underwriting systems and insurance documentation platforms is required for this role and daily tasks.
Attention to detail with a strong commitment to accuracy in all work products and deliverables produced.
Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field is expected and preferred for this position.
Minimum of several years of progressive underwriting experience in the insurance industry is necessary.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple accounts with competing priorities in a fast-paced setting.
Willingness to obtain and maintain any required licenses or certifications as mandated by state regulations.
Nice to have
CPCU or ARM designation or active progress toward obtaining one of these professional credentials.
Experience with international accounts or multi-national risk portfolios in the insurance market is valued.
Familiarity with reinsurance markets, treaty structures, facultative placement procedures, and underwriting workflows.
Knowledge of geopolitical risk factors and their direct impact on insurance pricing models and strategies.
Skills & tools
Proficiency in insurance underwriting software and agency management systems for daily workflow and productivity.
Strong analytical skills for risk assessment, financial evaluation, and exposure monitoring across all account types.
Experience with Microsoft Excel and data analysis spreadsheets for underwriting support and reporting purposes.
Understanding of policy wording, endorsements, coverage forms, and insurance contract structures and provisions.
Ability to use corporate email, calendar, and team collaboration platforms effectively for day-to-day communication.
Familiarity with document management, electronic filing, and records retention systems for organized file maintenance.
Knowledge of reinsurance treaties, facultative certificates, and placement documentation is beneficial for this role.
Comfortable working with large datasets, financial statements, and actuarial information to support underwriting decisions.
