About the role
Join the Insurance Operations team within GrabFin to build the technical infrastructure that expands financial access across Southeast Asia. In this Software Engineer, Backend role, you will focus on the systems powering insurance accounting, regulatory reporting, and external partner connectivity. The position centers on designing and maintaining robust, scalable backend services that ensure accuracy and reliability in critical financial and compliance workflows. You will work closely with both technical and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into scalable system designs. This role involves the full lifecycle of backend components, from initial architecture and development through deployment and ongoing maintenance. The work you perform will directly support Grab's mission of building a more inclusive and convenient digital economy across the region.

What you'll do
- Architect and build backend services for accounting, reporting, and integration platforms, ensuring they meet high standards of performance, scalability, and security. You will design systems that handle high-volume transactional data and support real-time financial operations.
- Manage regulatory compliance integrations with entities such as ISM, APAD, and JPJ, translating complex and evolving regulatory requirements into stable, maintainable technical interfaces. This includes ensuring data formats and submission timelines meet strict regulatory standards.
- Write and maintain high-quality code while participating in peer code reviews, upholding engineering excellence and team standards. Code reviews will focus on correctness, maintainability, and alignment with architectural principles.
- Collaborate across departments to design, ship, and troubleshoot new features, working closely with product managers, compliance specialists, and other engineers to align technical solutions with evolving business needs.
- Provide input on system architecture and technical strategy, contributing to long-term planning, technology decisions, and best practices for backend services.
- Join on-call rotations to maintain service uptime and reliability, responding promptly to production incidents, diagnosing issues, and implementing fixes to ensure continuous availability of critical financial systems.
- Implement secure and efficient data flows between internal systems and external partners, focusing on robustness, error handling, and maintainability of integration points.
- Optimize existing services to improve reliability, monitoring, and operational efficiency within the insurance operations ecosystem, using observability tools to drive improvements.
- Develop clear documentation for interfaces and processes, aiding future development, debugging, and onboarding of new team members.
- Support the delivery of critical financial and regulatory features that enable Grab's insurance products across Southeast Asia, ensuring timely and accurate execution in a regulated environment.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of professional software development experience in building and maintaining backend systems, with a proven track record of delivering reliable services.
- Proficiency in Java or Golang, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code in either language. You should understand language-specific idioms, concurrency models, and memory management principles.
- Practical knowledge of relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL, including experience with schema design, indexing strategies, query optimization, and transaction management.
- Experience with Git version control, demonstrating disciplined branching strategies, merging, and participation in code review workflows.
- Strong grasp of computer science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures, and complexity analysis, to solve technical problems effectively and efficiently.
- Hands-on experience deploying applications on AWS cloud infrastructure, using services such as EC2, RDS, S3, and related tools to build resilient and scalable applications.
- Ability to apply SOLID principles and clean architecture patterns in your work, ensuring modular, testable, and maintainable codebases.
- Understanding of financial and regulatory software systems is not required but is considered a valuable background for this role.

- Previous experience working with financial or regulatory software systems, especially in highly regulated environments where compliance and auditability are critical.
