Intern, Software Engineer Mobile
Job description
About the role
The Intern, Software Engineer Mobile position within the MALTA team at Grab presents a pivotal opportunity to contribute directly to the foundational systems that power one of Southeast Asia's largest mobility platforms. You will join a dedicated group of engineers responsible for building and maintaining the core infrastructure that underpins every interaction within the Grab mobile application. This role is centered on establishing robust, scalable, and highly available backend architecture while emphasizing automation and continuous delivery practices. Your work will ensure that the pipelines driving our services are efficient, reliable, and secure. By focusing on clean code, rigorous review processes, and cross-functional collaboration, you will play a direct role in enhancing the reliability, performance, and scalability of the Grab experience for millions of users. Every task you undertake, from implementing backend logic to troubleshooting intricate issues, will have a tangible impact on the platform's stability and user satisfaction. You will be expected to adhere to industry best practices and internal standards, producing maintainable and well-documented solutions. Through close collaboration with product managers, mobile developers, and other stakeholders, you will help translate business requirements into technically sound and production-ready components. This internship serves as a foundation for understanding large-scale system design and delivery in a high-growth tech environment, offering exposure to real-world challenges in mobile infrastructure.
What you'll do
As an intern in this role, your responsibilities will span the entire lifecycle of backend service development and maintenance. You will design and implement backend services that handle critical business logic essential for mobile operations, ensuring that functionality is both robust and efficient. You will conduct thorough code reviews to uphold code quality, readability, and long-term maintainability, helping to preserve the integrity of the codebase. Collaboration will be a key aspect of your work, as you partner with product managers and stakeholders to clarify project requirements and translate them into detailed technical specifications. You will be responsible for producing and continuously updating technical documentation for backend systems and architectural decisions, ensuring that knowledge is preserved and accessible. Investigating, isolating, and resolving complex backend technical issues in a timely manner will be a regular part of your duties, requiring strong analytical and debugging skills. You will also automate repetitive tasks to improve the efficiency of development and deployment cycles, reducing manual overhead and increasing productivity. Participation in the full software development lifecycle - from initial design through testing and deployment - will provide you with comprehensive insight into how high-quality software is delivered. Monitoring service performance and proposing actionable improvements to increase stability and scalability will help keep systems resilient under demand. You will liaise closely with mobile developers to ensure seamless integration between backend services and client applications, facilitating smooth communication and data exchange. Supporting the creation of test environments and assisting in the maintenance of development tools will further streamline engineering workflows. Implementing logging and monitoring strategies will enhance visibility into system behavior, enabling proactive identification of issues. Finally, you will assist in preparing technical presentations to communicate progress, challenges, and key decisions clearly and effectively to your team.
Requirements
To be considered for this internship, you must meet several essential criteria. First, you must be available to begin the internship in September 2026, aligning with Grab's intake schedule. You must currently be enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program majoring in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline, demonstrating a foundational commitment to computer science principles. Competence in at least one programming language is required, with proficiency in Python, Go, Java, Kotlin, Swift, or C/C++ being expected. You should possess knowledge of automated testing methodologies, including unit, integration, component, or end-to-end testing, to ensure code reliability and correctness. Practical experience using Git for version control and navigating command-line interfaces is essential, as these tools form the backbone of modern software development workflows. Additionally, you must be capable of working on-site in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, for the full duration of the internship, given the hands-on and collaborative nature of the role. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to debug issues within complex systems are necessary to tackle the challenges of backend infrastructure. Effective communication skills in English are required to collaborate seamlessly with team members, document processes, and articulate technical concepts. Meeting these requirements will position you as a suitable candidate capable of contributing meaningfully to the MALTA team's objectives and upholding Grab's engineering standards.
