About the role
GovTech is seeking a Full Stack Software Engineer to join the Skills and Workforce Development Agency on a full-time basis in Singapore. In this position, you will own the end-to-end development of digital products that empower individuals to understand their skills, explore diverse career pathways, and make informed learning and employment decisions. You will design, build, test, deploy, and maintain robust web applications and backend services that are scalable, reliable, and user-centric. Your work will directly contribute to public good by enabling citizens to navigate evolving labor market demands with confidence and clarity. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to translate complex user needs into technically sound and elegant solutions. This role requires you to take full ownership of engineering tasks, from initial problem discovery through to stable production delivery and continuous improvement. You will actively participate in technical design and architecture discussions, balancing considerations of quality, maintainability, and delivery speed to meet organizational goals. Furthermore, you will build observable systems, troubleshoot production issues, and implement monitoring that ensures service reliability and performance.

What you'll do
Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain web applications and backend services that form the foundation of skills discovery platforms.
Work across frontend, backend, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure to deliver cohesive and integrated digital solutions.
Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to translate user needs, business requirements, and policy constraints into actionable technical specifications.
Take ownership of engineering tasks from problem discovery, requirements refinement, and solution design to production deployment and post-launch optimization.
Contribute to technical design and architecture discussions, evaluating trade-offs between quality, maintainability, extensibility, and delivery speed.
Build observable systems that provide insight into performance, usage, and errors, and proactively troubleshoot production issues when they arise.
Improve engineering practices by strengthening automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, code quality standards, and deployment reliability.
Review code, share knowledge, and mentor peers to foster a collaborative engineering culture that emphasizes craftsmanship and collective ownership.
Explore and adopt new technologies, including AI-assisted development tools, to enhance productivity, experimentation, and innovation in service delivery.
Requirements
Possess practical software engineering experience building and maintaining production applications in real-world environments.
Demonstrate experience in both frontend and backend development, with strong capability in one area and a demonstrated willingness to work across the full technology stack.
Show proficiency with modern programming languages and frameworks commonly used in web development.
Exhibit a good understanding of REST APIs, database concepts, application architecture, and core software engineering fundamentals.
Have hands-on experience with relational or NoSQL databases, including schema design, querying, and optimization.
Demonstrate familiarity with cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, including core services and deployment patterns.
Possess the ability to independently investigate unfamiliar problems, analyze existing systems, and navigate complex codebases efficiently.
Show a strong capacity for learning and a willingness to quickly acquire new technologies, tools, and domain-specific knowledge.
Communicate effectively and collaborate well with cross-functional teams, including product, design, and technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
Possess experience with cloud-native applications, microservices, event-driven architectures, or distributed systems that enhance scalability and resilience.
Have experience with AWS services, containers, Kubernetes, or serverless technologies that support modern deployment practices.
Have experience with CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability tools, and production operations to ensure reliable software delivery.
Have experience working in agile, cross-functional product teams and adapting to iterative delivery methods.
Have experience with automated testing frameworks and modern software delivery practices that ensure quality at speed.
Have experience using AI-assisted software development tools effectively and responsibly to boost productivity and code quality.
Skills & tools
Frontend: JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Vue, Angular, or equivalent technologies for building responsive and accessible user interfaces.
Backend: Java, Python, Node.js, C#, or equivalent languages and frameworks for developing scalable and secure server-side logic.
Cloud: AWS, Azure, GCP for deploying, managing, and operating applications in cloud environments.
Databases: Relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, and NoSQL databases for managing diverse data models and access patterns.
