Technical Support Engineer
Job description
About the role
The role synthesizes customer feedback from email and chat channels into concrete product and process changes when the hire actively partners with engineering, design, and product teams. You will act as a critical bridge between user pain points and the technical solutions that resolve them, ensuring that frontline insights directly influence the product roadmap. This position requires an ownership mindset that frames you as a player-coach, demonstrating initiative and reliable follow-through on a diverse array of support and investigative tasks. You will spend a significant portion of your week engaged in planning, code review, and debugging activities, not merely responding to tickets. The ability to translate complex technical issues into clear, plain-language explanations will be essential in distinguishing your contributions and effectiveness. You will own the full lifecycle of customer inquiries, escalating intricate problems through appropriate channels to drive timely resolutions and systemic improvements. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on connecting user needs with technical feasibility to shape the future of the platform.
Key facts
What you'll do
Routing customer inquiries and escalations through Intercom and chat channels delivers timely resolutions to users on Gamma sites while maintaining detailed interaction records.
Conducting in-depth technical investigations into reported issues by reproducing problems, analyzing logs, and collaborating with engineering teams to identify root causes.
Translating ambiguous user reports into clear, actionable technical steps that engineers can implement to fix bugs or improve system behavior.
Owning specific products or features end to end, ensuring that complex tickets are resolved thoroughly and that follow-ups confirm lasting solutions.
Documenting recurring issues, resolutions, and patterns to create internal knowledge base articles that empower other support agents and reduce future ticket volume.
Collaborating closely with product and design teams to synthesize customer feedback into prioritized suggestions for new features or UX improvements.
Monitoring platform health and user sentiment across multiple channels to proactively identify emerging issues before they escalate to critical incidents.
Coordinating with engineering on release validation, verifying that newly deployed changes do not introduce regressions and that they solve the intended problems.
Providing real-time feedback during customer calls or chats to guide users through workarounds or diagnostic steps that maintain satisfaction and trust.
Analyzing support metrics to identify trends, highlight bottlenecks, and propose data-driven improvements to support processes and product stability.
Serving as a subject matter expert on the support tooling, helping to optimize workflows in Intercom and internal systems for greater efficiency.
Championing a quality-first mindset by ensuring that customer-reported issues are not just closed, but fully understood and resolved in the codebase.
Communicating complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, including executives, in a concise and impactful manner during status updates or incident reviews.
Taking ownership of ambiguous problems, defining clear investigation paths, and escalating appropriately when issues span multiple teams or systems.
Requirements
The posting states a minimum of 2 years of experience.
Two or more years of experience in technical customer support or QA for a highly technical product demonstrate analytical rigor and deep troubleshooting ability necessary for this role.
An ownership mindset is mandatory, framing a player-coach approach that shows initiative and reliable follow-through on diverse tasks without needing constant supervision.
You must possess the ability to explain technical decisions and complex system interactions in plain words, separating strong candidates from the rest of the field.
Experience working with agile methodologies such as sprints and daily standups is essential for success within the support engineering workflow.
A strong command of written communication is required, as you will spend part of every week on planning, code review, and debugging discussions, not just ticket resolution.
The capacity to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail is a hard bar for this position in a fast-paced environment.
Reliability and follow-through are non-negotiable, as the role depends on consistent execution and accountability when handling customer escalations.
You must be comfortable navigating internal tools, ticketing systems, and documentation repositories to perform your duties effectively.
Practical notes
Details are confirmed Typical interview steps
Hiring for engineering roles usually starts with a recruiter screen, followed by one or two technical rounds. Candidates often solve a coding problem, discuss past projects, and answer system design questions. Some loops include a take-home task. Final rounds typically cover team fit and give candidates a chance to ask questions. Interviewers look for how you break down an unfamiliar problem, not just whether you reach the answer. Practicing a few problems aloud and reviewing your own past projects are the best preparation.
Good to know
Technical support engineering often blends user communication with deep technical investigation. Clear communication translates user problems into concrete technical steps.
Questions to ask
Worth asking in any interview: how the team measures success, who the role works with daily, what the onboarding looks like, and what the company is trying to achieve this year. Asking what past hires did well is a strong final question. Keep the list short and pick the questions that matter most to you.
Career growth
Engineering careers usually progress from individual contributor to senior, staff, and principal levels. Some engineers move into management and lead teams of five to twenty people. Others stay on the technical track. Growth follows demonstrated impact, not tenure alone. A typical engineering ladder has clear levels with defined expectations for scope, quality, and mentorship. Moving up usually requires owning outcomes end to end rather than completing assigned tickets.
