About the role
In this dynamic position, you will be responsible for tracking and reporting on the activities of congressional committees as well as legislative actions occurring on the floors of the House and Senate. Your work will involve producing timely news articles and in-depth analyses for the CQ Roll Call brand, contributing to the understanding of current legislative developments.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Attend and cover committee markups in real-time from the U.S. Capitol and press gallery offices, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the proceedings.
- Generate news articles and analytical pieces on legislative actions, adhering to tight deadlines to keep our audience informed.
- Break down and clarify complex legislative amendments, bills, and procedural maneuvers for our subscribers, making intricate details accessible.
- Establish and nurture professional relationships with congressional staff to enhance the quality and depth of reporting.
- Propose story ideas and work closely with editors to align on coverage responsibilities and editorial direction.
- Collaborate with the newsroom team to effectively monitor and report on legislative actions and activities on the floor.
- Stay updated on the latest developments in Congress and adjust reporting focus as needed based on emerging news.
- Utilize various media platforms to enhance story reach and engagement, ensuring our content resonates with a broad audience.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss ongoing projects, share insights, and strategize on future coverage plans.
- Contribute to the overall mission of the Legislative Action Team by supporting colleagues and sharing resources.
- Maintain a flexible work schedule that aligns with the congressional calendar, ensuring availability during critical legislative events.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience is required.
- At least one year of reporting experience in a newsroom, publication, or congressional setting is essential.
- Familiarity with the operations of Capitol Hill and the legislative process is crucial for success in this role.
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate and interpret legislative proposals across a range of policy issues.
- Excellent writing abilities, with a commitment to maintaining impartiality in reporting.
- Willingness to adapt to a flexible work schedule that may vary based on congressional activities.
