About the role
The Senior Power Systems SCADA and Controls Engineer is a critical technical leadership position within Firmus Technologies, responsible for defining and owning the end-to-end design of AI Factory power delivery and control systems. This role establishes the strategic SCADA and controls roadmaps that guarantee reliability, scalability, and operational excellence across Firmus infrastructure. The position requires acting as the central technical authority for power systems design, control logic validation, and commissioning, ensuring that substation, generator, and cooling plant assets operate as a unified, secure, and efficient ecosystem. The engineer will translate complex project requirements into robust, field-proven control solutions while mentoring junior team members and championing continuous improvement against industry best practices and emerging standards.
What you'll do
Define and deliver SCADA and control strategies for power systems across Firmus AI Factory sites throughout the Asia Pacific region.
Architect power monitoring and control logic for substations, generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and cooling plant systems using modern protocols such as DNP3 and Modbus.
Develop, validate, and optimize control algorithms to maximize energy efficiency, power quality, redundancy, and uptime across critical infrastructure components.
Collaborate closely with electrical and mechanical engineers to translate project requirements into detailed control system specifications and functional designs.
Lead the integration of third-party vendor control systems into a cohesive, secure, and scalable architecture that aligns with Firmus model-to-grid infrastructure approaches.
Implement robust cybersecurity measures and safety interlocks to protect personnel, physical assets, and data integrity in accordance with Firmus Technologies standards.
Design comprehensive test plans and conduct factory and site acceptance testing to verify that control system performance meets or exceeds project specifications.
Troubleshoot complex power systems issues using SCADA tools, historical data analysis, and control logic diagnostics to resolve problems swiftly and minimize downtime.
Mentor and guide junior engineers in control system design, documentation, and commissioning practices to elevate team capability and consistency.
Champion continuous improvement by adopting industry best practices, emerging standards, and innovative technologies for power systems automation across AI infrastructure deployments.
Requirements
A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a closely related technical discipline.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with SCADA systems, control logic development, and power monitoring platforms in operational environments.
Proven background in designing, commissioning, or maintaining power systems for critical infrastructure or industrial settings, with a strong track record of reliability and safety compliance.
Strong technical proficiency with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, or IEC 61850 as deployed in real-world infrastructure projects.
Solid understanding of electrical protection schemes, switchgear configurations, and generator control systems, including practical troubleshooting skills.
Experience with control system programming and human-machine interface (HMI)/SCADA platforms such as Ignition, Wonderware, or equivalent systems used in industrial automation.
Comprehensive knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks relevant to industrial control systems (ICS) and demonstrated ability to implement security measures that protect networked assets.
The ability to interpret detailed technical specifications and transform them into executable control logic, test procedures, and validation protocols.
Nice to have
Experience within AI infrastructure power environments, including direct exposure to liquid cooling systems and energy management platforms that support high-density computing.
Familiarity with renewable energy integration, microgrid architectures, and energy storage systems as applied to data center or AI factory settings.
Background in modular construction methodology and prefabricated power solutions aligned with Firmus' approach to rapid, efficient deployment.
Exposure to high-density computing facilities and their distinct power distribution, cooling, and monitoring requirements.
Practical notes
This is a full-time position based in Launceston, Australia, with compensation ranging from $180,000 to $220,000 per year plus superannuation. The role may require travel within Asia Pacific regions to support commissioning, testing, and ongoing project activities. Applicants must hold or be eligible for a valid Australian work visa. Candidates must meet all specified requirements without exception, as this role demands a high level of technical authority and responsibility in defining the power systems that underpin Firmus' AI infrastructure leadership.
