Mechanical Project Engineer

About the role

Firmus Technologies is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to act as the owner's engineer on site, ensuring the mechanical aspects of our AI Factory builds are delivered safely, on time, and to budget. You will own the detailed mechanical design management, reviewing contractor drawings and equipment selections against strict contractual obligations and industry standards. The role requires you to carry out engineering calculations and provide technical guidance to contractors while tracking progress against milestones and identifying deviations early. You will attend site and progress meetings as the Subject Matter Expert in mechanical matters, conducting regular inspections to verify installations align with approved specifications. Additionally, you will prepare and review ITPs and test documentation to confirm that plant and equipment meet performance requirements through commissioning and Integrated Systems Testing. What you'll do

• Drive the engineering design and calculations necessary to deliver technical guidance and direction to contractors for mechanical systems.
• Review contractor mechanical drawings, documentation, and equipment selections to ensure strict alignment with contractual obligations, industry standards, safety compliance, and best practice.
• Manage detailed mechanical designs delivered by contractors, confirming adherence to Firmus standards and project requirements at every stage.
• Conduct regular site inspections to verify that installations are in line with approved drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
• Track progress against mechanical scope milestones, identify deviations early, and recommend recovery or mitigation actions to keep projects on schedule.
• Prepare ITPs and checklists that accurately test equipment and plant to confirm they meet contractual and performance requirements.
• Review ITPs and test documentation prepared by contractors for mechanical scopes of work, providing clear feedback and approvals where appropriate.
• Attend site and progress meetings as the Subject Matter Expert in the mechanical subject area to facilitate decision-making and issue resolution.
• Assist with the management of project documentation, including RFIs, variation requests, change control records, and site instructions for mechanical works.
• Participate in QA inspections, including factory acceptance tests, commissioning of mechanical systems, and Integrated Systems Testing.
• Provide on-the-ground oversight to ensure that mechanical installations are executed in accordance with design intent and operational objectives.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues and ensure smooth coordination between mechanical and other disciplines.
• Support the delivery of sustainable AI infrastructure by applying innovative engineering practices that optimize energy and water use.
• Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by documenting lessons learned and promoting best-in-class standards across projects.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in mechanical project engineering, with a strong background in mechanical design, delivery, and commissioning.
• Proven ability to work as the owner's engineer onsite, managing mechanical aspects of construction from late-stage design through commissioning and handover.
• Solid understanding of mechanical systems relevant to AI infrastructure, including liquid cooling, energy management, and modular construction methodology.
• Excellent skills in reviewing contractor drawings, documentation, and equipment selections against contractual obligations and industry standards.
• Strong capability to prepare and interpret ITPs, test documentation, and checklists to verify that plant and equipment meet performance requirements.
• Effective communication skills to act as the Subject Matter Expert in mechanical matters during site and progress meetings.
• Ability to track progress against milestones, identify deviations, and recommend recovery or mitigation actions to ensure projects stay on time and within budget.
• Commitment to working safely and ensuring that all mechanical installations comply with safety compliance and best practice.

Practical notes

The role is based in Launceston, Tasmania, and requires on-site presence at Firmus facilities. Candidates must be eligible to work in Australia without sponsorship needs where possible, and this position operates within the standard project schedules and site protocols. Travel may be required between project sites in the region, and adherence to Firmus quality, safety, and sustainability standards is essential throughout the engagement.
