Electrical Project Engineer

About the role

Firmus Technologies is actively searching for an Electrical Project Engineer who will act as the owner's engineer for sustainable AI Factory developments in Tasmania. The successful candidate will own the electrical and controls engineering integrity from late-stage design through construction, commissioning, and handover into operations. You will ensure all electrical deliverables are executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and strictly aligned with Firmus standards and project objectives. This role requires a proactive Subject Matter Expert who drives technical decisions and supports resolution of emerging issues on site. You will be a key contributor to the delivery of state-of-the-art facilities that prioritize efficiency, compliance, and sustainability.

What you'll do

Provide design management for detailed electrical and controls designs delivered by contractors, ensuring strict alignment with Firmus standards and project requirements.

Perform engineering design and calculations to deliver technical guidance and direction to contractors working on AI Factory infrastructure.

Review contractor electrical drawings, documentation, and equipment selections against contractual obligations, industry standards, safety compliance, and best practice.

Manage project documentation streams, including RFIs, variation requests, change control records, and site instructions specific to electrical and controls works.

Serve as the Subject Matter Expert in electrical and controls subject areas during site and progress meetings, representing Firmus Technologies.

Conduct regular site inspections to verify that installations conform precisely to approved drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.

Track progress against milestones for the electrical and controls scope, highlight deviations, and recommend timely recovery or mitigation actions.

Prepare ITPs and checklists that accurately test equipment and plant to confirm they meet contractual and performance requirements.

Review ITPs and test documentation prepared by contractors for electrical scopes of work, providing clear feedback and approvals where appropriate.

Participate in QA inspections, including factory acceptance tests, commissioning of electrical and control systems, and Integrated Systems Testing to ensure plant and equipment meet contract requirements and are tuned for optimum performance.

Provide on-the-ground oversight of electrical contractor commissioning activities, ensuring tests are executed per approved procedures, issues are captured and resolved, and systems are validated prior to handover.

Contribute to the creation of Operation and Maintenance manuals that include all maintenance requirements for systems and equipment.

Support the establishment of robust documentation trails that facilitate smooth handover and long-term operational reliability.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align electrical project deliverables with broader project timelines and factory integration goals.

Requirements

Hold a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering as a non-negotiable academic baseline for this role.

Bring a minimum of 3+ years of project engineer experience focused on electrical, HV, utilities, infrastructure, or data centre construction projects.

Demonstrate a strong understanding of electrical design principles, methodologies, and relevant Australian standards for compliance and technical accuracy.

Interpret drawings and technical documentation with precision to ensure deliverables meet stringent project specifications.

Apply analytical problem-solving skills to ambiguous challenges, developing effective and innovative technical solutions under project constraints.

Maintain a detail-oriented approach to work to guarantee accuracy in design, testing, and documentation quality.

Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills to articulate ideas and convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Show demonstrated experience working within cross-functional, multi-cultural teams, collaborating effectively with contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

Exercise excellent organisation and time-management skills to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment without compromising safety or quality.

Display a strong willingness to learn and proactively contribute to team and organisational goals throughout the project lifecycle.

Show flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities, with an eagerness to take on new responsibilities and learn on the job.

Value proficiency in using computer-aided design (CAD) software to draft electrical SLDs and schematics as a desirable professional skill.

Possess the capability to work independently and as part of a structured team in a technically complex environment.
