About the role
Figure is building general-purpose humanoid robots designed to function in industrial and residential settings to help solve labor shortages. You will manage the safety certification and regulatory roadmap for our robotics hardware from the initial design phase through to commercial release. In this capacity, you will own the end-to-end safety strategy, ensuring that every system we ship meets the highest levels of integrity and reliability. You will serve as the authoritative expert on compliance matters, shaping how the organization understands and implements safety requirements. Your work will directly influence the design decisions that determine whether products are safe to deploy in the real world. You will translate complex regulatory language into actionable engineering constraints for cross-functional teams. This role requires a proactive mindset, as you will anticipate compliance risks before they manifest in later development stages. You will be the bridge between rigorous safety standards and the fast-paced reality of product development.

The is responsible for defining and executing the safety and regulatory strategy that allows general-purpose humanoid robots to move from concept to commercial deployment. You will act as the central authority on product compliance, ensuring that hardware, software, and integrated control systems meet stringent safety requirements before reaching any customer or facility. This position requires deep expertise in standards interpretation, risk engineering, and cross-functional leadership to align product development with global regulatory expectations. You will guide critical design decisions, influence architecture trade-offs, and ensure that safety is embedded into every iteration of the product lifecycle. The role combines technical rigor with strategic influence, making compliance a core enabler of innovation rather than a gatekeeper.
What you'll do
- Direct the full safety certification strategy for our humanoid robots and related ecosystem products, from initial concept through commercial release.
- Determine the appropriate certification path by interpreting mandatory and relevant safety standards including UL, IEC, ISO, CE, and FCC.
- Manage the testing process by acting as the main point of contact for test labs, NRTLs, and other certification organizations.
- Integrate safety protocols into every stage of the product lifecycle, from design and prototyping to validation and production.
- Conduct hazard analysis tasks such as FMEA, HARA, and FTA to identify and prioritize potential failure modes.
- Convert identified hazards into specific, testable requirements for hardware, software, and controls teams.
- Verify that safety requirements are met during both the development and mass production phases through traceable validation activities.
- Define and maintain traceability between regulatory requirements, system architectures, and verification activities to ensure complete coverage.
- Develop and update safety documentation, including risk assessments, test plans, verification protocols, and compliance reports.
- Collaborate with legal and regulatory affairs to ensure alignment with evolving jurisdictional requirements across operating markets.
- Support the preparation of technical files and declarations of conformity for regulatory submissions and audits.
- Drive the resolution of non-conformances and ensure that corrective and preventive actions are implemented effectively.
- Partner with operations to ensure that production processes adhere to established safety and compliance standards.
- Mentor junior engineers on best practices for safety-driven design and compliance execution within a fast-paced robotics environment.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field with a strong technical foundation.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in product safety engineering within regulated sectors such as medical devices, consumer electronics, automotive, industrial automation, or robotics.
- Demonstrated background in compliance for autonomous systems, AMRs, ADAS, or collaborative robots operating in dynamic environments.
- Proven proficiency in functional safety and product safety standards relevant to electromechanical and software-driven systems.
- Hands-on experience managing UL, CE, or IEC certification programs from the design stage through final approval and market release.
- Strong ability to coordinate effectively across electrical, mechanical, and software engineering teams to ensure integrated compliance.
- Clear understanding of how safety requirements translate into technical specifications and verification test cases.
- Salary range: $150,000 to $250,000 per year, reflecting individual expertise, scope of responsibility, and demonstrated performance.

- Experience leading hazard and risk assessments and translating findings into detailed technical specifications and design controls.
- Knowledge of battery safety standards and inductive charging certification requirements for portable and mobile robotic systems.
Skills & tools
- In-depth knowledge of UL, IEC, ISO, CE, and FCC standards as they apply to robotics and connected devices.
- Practical experience with hazard analysis methodologies including HARA, FMEA, and FTA.
- Strong background in robotics safety compliance frameworks and implementation strategies.
- Ability to integrate safety requirements into both hardware and software development processes.
