Senior Software Engineer in Test
Job description
About the role
Field Ai develops intelligent robotics systems designed for real-world environments. We are looking for an experienced engineer to build high-quality testing frameworks that ensure our embodied AI performs reliably in the field. You will own the entire testing lifecycle for our robotics software stack, defining strategies that validate perception, decision-making, and control systems under diverse conditions. This role requires you to architect resilient test solutions that mirror the complexity of physical deployment scenarios while maintaining strict quality gates. You will be responsible for ensuring that every feature is verifiable, observable, and safe before it reaches a real robot in the field. Your work will directly influence the reliability and robustness of autonomous behaviors in unstructured environments. By establishing rigorous testing standards, you enable the engineering team to iterate quickly without compromising on safety or performance.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect and evolve automated testing frameworks using Playwright to validate complex user interactions and system workflows.
- Partner closely with software developers to improve testability, designing test hooks, mocks, and instrumentation into the application architecture.
- Engineer automated test solutions for REST and GraphQL APIs to verify data integrity, response accuracy, and service reliability.
- Oversee and optimize CI/CD pipelines to embed automated testing seamlessly within the deployment lifecycle.
- Investigate and resolve intricate issues involving web architectures, asynchronous network calls, and dynamic DOM structures to uphold system stability.
- Implement shift-left quality practices by creating tests early in the development cycle to catch defects when they are fastest to fix.
- Drive the creation of reusable test utilities and libraries that reduce duplication and accelerate test authoring across multiple projects.
- Monitor test health, analyze failure patterns, and refine test suites to eliminate flakiness while improving coverage of critical paths.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define acceptance criteria and translate product requirements into concrete test scenarios.
- Contribute to the improvement of product observability by closing testing gaps that could lead to undetected regressions in production.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor or Master degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or possess equivalent professional experience.
- Bring 5 to 8 years of professional experience in software testing or quality assurance roles within technology-driven environments.
- Demonstrate strong proficiency in TypeScript, JavaScript, or other object-oriented or functional programming languages used in modern software systems.
- Show deep expertise in Playwright, including the implementation of custom fixtures, network request mocking, multi-authentication state management, and scalable Page Object Models.
- Have hands-on experience with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, CircleCI, or GitLab CI to automate testing workflows and reporting.
- Embrace a shift-left approach to quality assurance, advocating for early testing and continuous feedback throughout the development process.
- Exhibit meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to identify subtle bugs, edge cases, and timing-related issues in distributed systems.
- Communicate effectively with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to align testing strategies with business and technical objectives.
Nice to have
- Experience testing complex systems such as microfrontends, high-frequency state dashboards, or real-time data streaming applications.
- Background in hardware, IoT, or robotics, particularly involving physical devices or simulation environments that mirror real-world constraints.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure on AWS or GCP, along with Docker, for managing and scaling test execution agents.
- A proven track record of improving product observability and identifying testing gaps that reduce incident rates or user impact.
