About the role
Fastly is seeking a Legal Director to oversee commercial legal operations and strategy for the Asia-Pacific region. This role focuses on managing complex contract negotiations, providing guidance on regional regulatory requirements, and supporting the growth of our edge cloud platform business. The successful candidate will own the end-to-end legal lifecycle for commercial transactions, ensuring that legal risk is identified and managed proactively in alignment with business objectives. What you'll do
- Lead the drafting and negotiation of commercial agreements, including master service agreements, professional services contracts, and partner deals, ensuring terms are balanced to protect the company while facilitating business growth.
- Provide legal counsel to internal stakeholders regarding regional business operations and growth strategies, translating complex legal concepts into actionable business insights.
- Manage regulatory compliance and risk mitigation efforts specific to the Asia-Pacific market, staying abreast of evolving legal landscapes across multiple jurisdictions.
- Collaborate with global legal teams to ensure consistency in contracting standards and corporate policies, while adapting frameworks to meet local requirements and business needs.
- Advise on data privacy, security, and intellectual property matters as they relate to commercial transactions, integrating technical and legal considerations to safeguard assets and ensure compliance.
- Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the edge cloud platform business, enabling the legal team to provide timely and relevant advice that supports commercial objectives.
- Own the negotiation strategy for key commercial agreements, leveraging legal expertise to optimize terms and mitigate exposure to liability or operational risk.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal business partners, external counsel, and key stakeholders to foster a collaborative approach to legal problem-solving.
- Monitor and report on legal trends, regulatory changes, and market developments that could impact commercial activities, providing proactive guidance to leadership.
- Ensure all commercial documentation aligns with Fastly's risk appetite and governance frameworks, supporting the company's broader compliance and audit objectives.
- Drive process improvements in contract lifecycle management, enhancing efficiency and visibility across the commercial legal function.
- Act as the primary legal contact for key commercial initiatives in the region, ensuring seamless coordination and representation in all contractual matters.
Requirements
- Qualified lawyer with extensive experience in commercial law, specifically within the technology or software-as-a-service sector, demonstrating a clear understanding of the business dynamics and legal challenges inherent in fast-growth tech environments.
- Proven track record of managing complex, high-value contract negotiations in a fast-paced environment, with a history of delivering favorable outcomes under tight deadlines.
- Deep understanding of legal frameworks governing cloud computing, data protection, and internet infrastructure, including relevant statutes, regulations, and case law across key Asia-Pacific jurisdictions.
- Ability to provide clear, actionable legal advice to business leaders and cross-functional teams, distilling complex legal issues into practical recommendations that support informed decision-making.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to navigate multi-jurisdictional legal environments, working effectively with stakeholders who may have varying levels of legal knowledge and different cultural expectations.
- Demonstrated experience working in a global, matrixed organization, where collaboration across time zones, legal departments, and business units is essential to success.
- A methodical approach to risk assessment and management, with the ability to identify potential legal issues before they escalate and to propose mitigation strategies that balance risk and opportunity.
