About the role
The Senior Engineering Manager, Containers at the Edge will define the long-term strategic vision and multi-year technical roadmap for distributed container infrastructure at the edge in support of customer workloads. In this role, you will hire and lead a high-performing engineering team that includes software engineers, principal-level individual contributors, and SREs, focusing on organizational structure, talent development, and scaling team capabilities to meet future demand. You will foster a culture of technical rigor, operational excellence, and innovation across the entire platform domain, moving beyond single-team execution to drive cross-organizational advancements. While reliability is critical, innovation is key to success, driving strategic improvements and building foundational team processes and software systems that continually evolve. You will partner closely with security and networking teams to harden deployment pipelines and runtime environments at scale. You will use deep, related technical experience to succeed in this role, including your own development contributions to production-grade software.

- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders using a product-owner mindset to define clear roadmaps and priorities that balance competing demands.
- Clearly communicate the strategy, progress, and risk profile to executive leadership and technical stakeholders across the company to maintain transparency and alignment.
- Use deep, related technical experience, including your own development contributions, to navigate complex problems and guide design decisions that impact platform reliability and performance.
- Partner closely with security and networking teams to harden deployment pipelines and runtime environments at scale, ensuring robust and secure operations.
- Streamline incident response practices by turning operational data into durable process improvements for on-call teams, reducing mean time to resolution.
- Build and maintain operational dashboards that expose platform health, enabling faster, data-driven decisions for product and infrastructure stakeholders.
- Forge partnerships with adjacent teams to clarify interfaces and ownership, reducing friction in shared platform efforts and enabling smoother collaboration.
- Mentor staff and senior contributors, strengthening technical careers through regular feedback, coaching, and targeted growth opportunities.
- Drive durable roadmaps and facilitate collaboration across cross-functional groups with differing priorities to ensure cohesive execution.
- Automate large-scale infrastructure in complex on-premises environments with dynamic networking requirements, improving efficiency and resilience.
- Leverage experience with distributed systems, CDN, container networking, platform ownership, and virtualization technology to guide architectural direction.
- Write production-grade software in Go, Rust, or C/C++ for edge-constrained environments, ensuring performance, reliability, and security.
Requirements
- Bring four or more years of experience managing software engineering or site reliability engineering teams through demanding production challenges.
- Hold ten or more years of related technical experience with distributed systems, CDN, or cloud infrastructure such as container networking, platform ownership, and virtualization technology.
- Code extensively in Go, Rust, or C/C++, writing production-grade software for edge-constrained environments.
- Drive durable roadmaps and facilitate collaboration across cross-functional groups with differing priorities.
- Have experience automating large-scale infrastructure in complex on-premises environments with dynamic networking requirements.
- Demonstrate hands-on technical leadership by contributing to architecture reviews and guiding design decisions that impact platform reliability and performance.
- Partner closely with security and networking teams to harden deployment pipelines and runtime environments at scale.
- Streamline incident response practices, turning operational data into durable process improvements for on-call teams.
Nice to have
- Experience contributing to Fastly-related products such as Compute at Edge, VCL, or related edge technologies is valued.
