General Application
Job description
About the role
You will architect and validate the core thermal and mechanical systems that define how Exowatt captures, stores, and releases solar energy for the AI era. You will own the end to end design of the P3 system, translating abstract energy requirements into concrete hardware specifications and performance guarantees. You will lead the creation of rigorous test protocols that de risk new materials, configurations, and control strategies before they scale. You will collaborate closely with software, product, and operations teams to ensure your designs are manufacturable, serviceable, and aligned with real world operating conditions. You will analyze field data to identify failure modes and drive iterative improvements that increase reliability and efficiency over time. You will own critical calculations, trade studies, and technical documentation that justify major design decisions to leadership and investors. You will mentor junior engineers by setting clear standards for analysis, communication, and safety in all deliverables. You will act as the primary technical advocate for the P3 platform, ensuring that every proposal is grounded in evidence and aligned with Exowatt's mission.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define the functional architecture of the P3 system, including thermal storage pathways, heat transfer mechanisms, and power conversion interfaces.
Conduct detailed energy and exergy analysis to size storage volumes, select working fluids, and optimize round trip efficiency across operating conditions.
Develop mechanical concepts for solar energy collection, thermal retention, and power generation, ensuring they meet durability and safety targets.
Create engineering drawings, bills of materials, and process specifications that enable reliable sourcing, fabrication, and assembly.
Design and execute validation tests that replicate extreme weather, grid interaction scenarios, and long duration discharge cycles.
Build diagnostic and monitoring capabilities into hardware so that performance trends, anomalies, and degradation modes are observable in real time.
Partner with manufacturing partners to translate designs into robust production processes, including assembly jigs, test fixtures, and quality checks.
Support installation and commissioning activities in the field, translating technical designs into practical procedures for diverse sites.
Lead failure mode and effects analysis to identify single points of failure and implement mitigation strategies before scale up.
Translate customer requirements and operational constraints into updated hardware specifications that balance cost, performance, and risk.
Coordinate with software teams to ensure control algorithms, data pipelines, and user interfaces are compatible with your hardware designs.
Document design decisions, trade offs, and assumptions in a clear and searchable format that supports future audits and iterations.
Champion safety and regulatory compliance, ensuring that all designs respect electrical, thermal, and environmental standards.
Present technical progress to stakeholders, using quantitative evidence to justify investments, timelines, and resource allocations.
Requirements

You have demonstrated experience analyzing thermal systems, heat transfer processes, and energy conversion technologies.
You are proficient in engineering analysis tools such as finite element analysis, system modeling, and performance simulation relevant to power conversion and storage.
You have a strong grasp of mechanical design, including load paths, stress analysis, and tolerance stacking for assemblies exposed to demanding environments.
You understand the fundamentals of fluid flow, thermodynamics, and heat transfer as they apply to energy storage and power generation equipment.
You are comfortable working with high power density concepts, including thermal management strategies and materials selection under thermal cycling.
You have experience translating technical requirements into hardware specifications that can be sourced, built, and tested in a repeatable way.
You communicate clearly in written and verbal form, able to distill complex engineering trade offs for both technical and non technical audiences.
