Field Engineer

About the role

You will own the daily execution of field engineering activities that ensure construction activities align precisely with the design intent and client specifications. You will serve as the critical link between the design office and the project site, interpreting complex drawings and technical documents for the field crew. In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring construction progress, identifying potential issues before they escalate, and implementing corrective actions in real time. You will own the production of accurate as-built documentation and field reports that capture every detail of the construction process. You will actively participate in value engineering initiatives, leveraging your technical knowledge to optimize construction methods without compromising quality. You will enforce strict adherence to safety protocols and quality standards on every site visit to protect both personnel and the integrity of the asset. You will coordinate with subcontractors and inspectors to resolve technical queries and maintain a smooth workflow. Ultimately, you will be accountable for delivering engineering support that drives project efficiency, quality, and client satisfaction on every engagement.

Investigate construction discrepancies by interpreting design drawings and specifications to validate field installations against engineering standards.

Conduct comprehensive field inspections to verify that construction methods, materials, and workmanship comply with project requirements and regulatory codes.

Generate detailed field reports and engineering correspondence that document daily activities, observations, and decisions for project records.

Utilize advanced problem-solving skills to analyze construction challenges and recommend practical solutions that maintain project momentum.

Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, and trade partners to clarify design intent and ensure cohesive execution of complex tasks.

Perform layout verification and measurements to confirm that constructed elements align with design dimensions and tolerances.

Monitor the quality of installed work through rigorous observation, ensuring that all construction activities adhere to approved design documents.

Track and document construction progress against the project schedule, identifying potential delays and supporting proactive mitigation strategies.

Prepare sketches and diagrams that illustrate construction conditions, modifications, and deviations to facilitate clear communication with the project team.

Assist in the preparation of technical submittals and responses to requests for information (RFIs) to support timely decision-making on site.

Support the implementation of value engineering proposals by evaluating alternatives and assessing their impact on design integrity and constructability.

Provide on-site engineering support during critical construction milestones to ensure that quality standards are upheld under pressure.

Verify that construction activities adhere to safety and quality protocols, minimizing risks and ensuring compliance with project standards.

Collaborate with external inspectors and consultants to address observations and ensure that deliverables meet all required specifications.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related technical field from an accredited institution.

You must have a minimum of five years of progressive experience in project engineering, with a demonstrated focus on heavy-civil construction projects.

You must hold a valid driver's license with a clean driving record, as this role requires frequent travel across multiple states.

You must be authorized to work in the United States and not require sponsorship for employment at this time.

You must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand or walk for extended periods while conducting field inspections.

You must be willing to undergo pre-employment drug screening and background check as part of the hiring process.

You must have experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and survey information in a professional setting.

You must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with project teams and stakeholders.

Nice to have

Preferred candidates will have experience working with pre-stressed concrete tanks and other elevated storage systems.

Preferred candidates will have knowledge of industry standards and best practices relevant to liquid storage construction.

Practical notes

This position is project-based, requiring frequent travel extensively throughout the United States to project sites.
