Manager, Safety Analytics
Job description
About the role
The SCAR team safeguards Discord's platform integrity by detecting, analyzing, and disrupting high-volume threats. The role leads safety strategy and coordinates cross-functional responses.
Data roles turn raw information into decisions. Analysts query databases and build dashboards. Data scientists build models that predict outcomes. Data engineers build the pipelines that move and store data. All three work closely with business teams and need a mix of statistics, coding, and communication. Nearly every modern company runs on data teams, from startups to banks. A strong portfolio of past analyses matters more than degrees in many hiring decisions.
Key facts
What you'll do
Platform abuse patterns are uncovered by data analysts, scientists, and researchers, and adversarial behaviors are documented for long-term understanding. Automated countermeasures for the platform are developed with the safety machine learning team by analyzing threat signals and turning insights into action.
Requirements
The posting states a pay range of $220000 to $275000.
People management experience leading technical teams, including engineers, data scientists, analysts, and applied researchers, is required for 2+ years in comparable roles. Professional work in Trust & Safety covering fraud, spam, scams, account compromise, or other high-volume threats is required for 4+ years. Fluency in SQL and/or Python is necessary for data investigation and pattern analysis. Measurement and experimentation expertise is required to evaluate abuse impact and countermeasure effectiveness. Operational workflows and incident response processes must be driven to increase team and reduce manual effort over time. Complex technical topics are translated into clear takeaways for senior leadership while enabling effective cross-functional collaboration.
Nice to have
Experience leveraging LLMs or AI agents for incident response, investigation automation, or signal triage in safety workflows is valued. Background tackling scaled abuse at large social platforms, marketplaces, or other high-volume consumer products is valued. Threat intelligence research understanding internet infrastructure and attacker tools and techniques is valued. Strong passion for Discord and gaming supporting appreciation for the communities served by the platform is valued.
Practical notes
Reasonable accommodations are available during the interview process for candidates who request them. Typical interview steps
Data interviews commonly include a SQL or coding exercise, a statistics question, and a case study. Candidates may be asked to design a metric, interpret an experiment, or build a small model. Some companies give a take-home analysis. Expect questions about past projects and the business impact of your work. Interviewers often evaluate how you communicate uncertainty and business impact, not only the math. Bringing a clean write-up of a past analysis to the interview is well received.
Good to know
The role focuses on platform safety analytics within a large, multiplatform gaming community. SQL and Python are primary tools for data investigation and measurement in this position. The team balances automated systems, research, and incident response to counter high-volume threats. Success requires fluency in cross-functional influence to drive safety-by-design decisions. The position values both technical rigor and a strong passion for gaming communities.
Career growth
Data careers grow toward senior analyst, staff data scientist, or data engineering lead. Many professionals specialize in machine learning, analytics, or infrastructure. Cross-functional work with product and engineering teams becomes more important at senior levels. The field changes quickly, so continuous learning is part of the job. Professionals who can translate numbers into decisions tend to advance fastest.
