Staff Software Engineer
Job description
About the Role
CS Disco is at the forefront of legal technology innovation, dedicated to redefining how legal professionals operate. Our mission is to empower lawyers with data-oriented, fact-based outcomes by eliminating inefficiencies inherent in traditional legal processes. We began by revolutionizing the critical discovery phase, particularly through our Ediscovery offerings, which enable legal teams to achieve remarkable efficiency. As data proliferation continues to challenge the limits of conventional technology, we commit to delivering magical solutions that operate at petabyte scale. This requires high availability, maximum performance, and minimized operational costs, all while ensuring the utmost in data security, privacy, and sovereignty. Our "product first" culture drives the creation of a unified platform designed to minimize human toil and enhance the practice of law through thoughtful, lawyer-inspired design and cloud-enabled technology.
This Staff Software Engineer role is central to that vision. You will be a key contributor responsible for both hands-on technical execution and long-term architectural guidance. You will ensure our products and backend systems meet current and future demands, playing a pivotal role in maintaining and evolving the software that powers our business. Your work will directly impact the ability of legal teams to focus on high-value judgment while our platform handles scale and complexity with high availability and performance.
What You'll Do
You will architect and implement the core backend services that form the foundation of the Disco platform, analyzing complex business problems to devise performant and maintainable software solutions. Your responsibilities will include optimizing infrastructure to handle increasing data loads while reducing operational overhead, meticulously reviewing code to uphold quality standards, and sharing best practices across engineering teams. Collaboration with cross-functional partners, including product managers and designers, will be essential to align technical execution with user expectations. You will own the debugging of complex production issues and drive them to resolution, while mentoring junior engineers to elevate the technical craftsmanship of the organization. This role involves defining and enforcing system design patterns that ensure long-term extensibility, integrating modern cloud services to build secure and compliant data processing workflows, and participating in on-call rotations to support critical production incidents.
Requirements
To succeed in this role, you must possess a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. You need a minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in backend software development, with a demonstrated history of building and operating large-scale, high-throughput systems. Proficiency in designing fault-tolerant systems capable of handling petabyte-scale data is essential, alongside strong expertise in both relational and non-relational data stores. Deep knowledge of distributed systems principles and cloud infrastructure operations is a non-negotiable requirement. You must have demonstrable experience designing and implementing secure systems following industry best practices. Comfort with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes is required, as is proven ability to write clean, tested, and maintainable code in statically typed languages. You must have a history of delivering cloud-native applications with a focus on operational excellence and a strong understanding of networking protocols and API design patterns.
Even Better If You Have
Experience with multi-tenant architecture and SaaS platform operations would be advantageous. Familiarity with security frameworks and compliance standards relevant to legal data is preferred. Proficiency in additional programming languages such as Python or Java would broaden your contributions. Experience collaborating closely with user interface development teams is valued.
