Principal, Software Engineering (Adobe
Job description
About the role
DEPT®® is seeking a Principal, Software Engineering (Adobe
Integrations & Automations) to join our forward-deployed architecture squad in North America. In this capacity, you will own the full lifecycle of complex middleware initiatives that connect critical business systems for global clients. You will serve as the technical authority responsible for re-architecting fragile integration patterns into resilient, scalable solutions that support enterprise commerce and marketing operations. The role demands deep hands-on involvement in designing, building, and maintaining serverless integrations that replace legacy synchronous calls with robust, event-driven workflows. You will partner closely with solution architects and client stakeholders to translate business requirements into secure and maintainable integration strategies. Success in this role will be measured by your ability to eliminate systemic bottlenecks, reduce failure rates, and ensure continuous data flow across distributed platforms. You will champion modern development practices that align with our platform-agnostic Application Craft methodology and drive long-term operational stability.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Remediate broken middleware by re-architecting API paths, custom service integrations, and data calls that cause timeouts, latency, or outages.
- Shift custom system extensions from brittle, in-process codebase overrides to modern, serverless, out-of-process architectures that improve maintainability.
- Construct automated handoff hooks and workflow pipelines that connect work management systems with downstream marketing execution engines.
- Design, build, and test robust webhook configurations and event-driven data transfer layers that ensure reliable system communication.
- Collaborate with web and data architects to secure end-to-end commerce, customer, and transactional data pathways across integrated platforms.
- Apply deep technical command of REST and GraphQL API design, serverless microservices, and secure authentication models such as OAuth.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex system connection bottlenecks and latency issues across multi-platform networks in agency and enterprise environments.
- Work directly with client development teams, explaining technical fixes and integration strategies in a consultative and clear manner.
- Leverage Adobe Workfront and Adobe Workfront Fusion to configure and optimize workflows that meet demanding client requirements.
- Utilize Adobe App Builder and Adobe Commerce API Mesh to build out-of-process system extensions that scale under load.
- Establish integrations between Adobe Experience Manager (AEM Assets) and external work management tools to support creative and operational workflows.
- Ensure long-term stability of custom integrations by migrating legacy synchronous calls to asynchronous, resilient patterns.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to define integration standards and best practices that enhance system interoperability.
- Support ongoing optimization of middleware performance, reliability, and security across client technology landscapes.
- Contribute to architectural reviews and solution designs that impact large-scale, distributed digital ecosystems.
Requirements
- Bring 6+ years of backend software engineering or systems integration experience inside an agency, consulting, or enterprise environment.
- Demonstrate deep technical command of REST and GraphQL API design, serverless microservices, webhooks, and secure authentication models (OAuth).
- Include direct experience developing and configuring workflows inside Adobe Workfront and Adobe Workfront Fusion.
- Include hands-on experience utilizing Adobe App Builder and Adobe Commerce API Mesh to build out-of-process system extensions.
- Show familiarity connecting Adobe Experience Manager (AEM Assets) and creative workflows with external work management tools.
- Prove proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex system connection bottlenecks and latency issues across multi-platform networks.
- Exhibit strong collaborative skills with the ability to work directly with client development teams and explain technical fixes clearly.
- Hold eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship for this role.
- Be prepared to travel as required for client engagements and project needs.
- Be capable of committing to the role on a full-time basis as outlined in the engagement terms.
Nice to have
