On-Site Sustainability Program Manager

About the role

You will own the end-to-end sustainability performance of Daniels Sharpsmart's integrated waste solutions within ChristianaCare, translating complex regulatory and operational requirements into clear, executable strategies at the facility level. You will act as the primary liaison between Daniels Sharpsmart and ChristianaCare, ensuring that waste management practices not only meet but exceed compliance standards while advancing measurable environmental and cost-saving outcomes. This role requires you to synthesize data from multiple facilities, distill insights, and drive continuous improvement across the entire service footprint. You will be responsible for embedding sustainable thinking into every interaction, from vendor management to frontline staff education. Ultimately, your work will ensure that Daniels Sharpsmart delivers tangible, auditable value in waste reduction, safety, and environmental stewardship for ChristianaCare.

What you'll do

Develop and execute ChristianaCare's waste management strategies in alignment with defined business metrics, compliance requirements, training objectives, cost savings, and sustainability targets.

Establish and maintain dedicated communication channels and structured meeting cadences with key stakeholders at every facility to ensure alignment and timely issue resolution.

Provide robust regulatory compliance support by coordinating appropriate resources to ensure full adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing Daniels managed waste streams.

Proactively identify opportunities to mitigate regulatory, operational, and safety risks through systematic analysis and corrective action follow-up.

Serve as the primary onsite resource for monitoring adherence to Daniels standards and ChristianaCare safety standards across all service locations.

Manage third-party vendor relationships for shredding services, including reviewing billing accuracy, managing safety and regulatory compliance initiatives, and delivering detailed billing metrics.

Oversee the complete Daniels Total Waste Solutions Program, driving defined program key performance indicators and leading segregation and reduction initiatives.

Monitor and report on program performance by incorporating data on additional waste streams provided by ChristianaCare to track sustainability and emissions outcomes.

Deliver benchmark reporting that compares facility and system sustainability improvements against other large health systems across the country.

Analyze and report ChristianaCare's performance metrics through comprehensive monthly reporting packets and regulatory & waste analysis reports.

Support data-driven decision-making by identifying cost savings and efficiency opportunities based on trend analysis, utilization patterns, and waste stream optimization.

Align internal relationships across Billing, Operations, Service, and Sustainability teams to ensure seamless integration and support for ChristianaCare.

Provide expert guidance and support on the full range of Daniels products and services to ChristianaCare stakeholders.

Manage and optimize container right-sizing initiatives to ensure facilities are equipped with appropriately sized containers that maximize waste collection efficiency.

Optimize service and routing by leveraging waste volume data to reduce the total number of pickups and minimize fuel consumption.

Champion proper waste segregation and lead continuous improvement efforts to reduce waste volumes in higher treatment streams requiring incineration or transport.

Coordinate with relevant teams to proactively identify process changes that increase landfill diversion and advance broader sustainability objectives.

Conduct routine audits at hospital sites, including sharps, regulated medical waste, chemotherapy, non-hazardous pharmaceutical, and confidential document shredding audits.

Perform ad hoc waste audits as requested to support deeper analysis and program refinement.

Deliver system-level training and education through in-person and virtual sessions on waste segregation, best practices, container features, hazardous waste procedures, and consumable ordering.

Provide ongoing expertise and support to ChristianaCare regarding the Daniels product line and evolving service offerings.

Requirements

Demonstrated ability to manage complex sustainability and waste management programs within a large healthcare environment.

Strong understanding of federal, state, and local regulations governing medical waste and related disposal streams.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret data and translate it into actionable recommendations.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with multiple stakeholders across diverse facilities.

Proven experience in managing third-party vendor relationships and performance monitoring.

Solid knowledge of waste segregation principles and sustainable waste management practices.

Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team in a fast-paced healthcare setting.

Nice to have

Preferred experience with healthcare sustainability reporting and metric tracking.

Familiarity with large-scale health system operations and procurement processes.

Experience with waste optimization technologies and route optimization software.
