About the role

The Bus Attendant owns the safety and well-being of students during their daily commute to and from school. This role requires a vigilant presence who monitors student behavior to prevent incidents and ensure a secure environment. You are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and order of the bus interior, creating a welcoming space for all riders. The position demands consistent communication with the driver to coordinate safe loading and unloading procedures at designated stops. You will actively supervise students, stepping in to de-escalate conflicts and reinforce respectful conduct as needed. This role involves building positive relationships with students, fostering a sense of trust and reliability during transit. You will also assist students who require guidance or support in navigating the bus environment safely. Ultimately, you contribute directly to the mission of the school by ensuring that students arrive at school and return home safely and on schedule.

What you'll do

Supervise student behavior on the bus to ensure a safe and orderly environment during transit.

Assist students with boarding and exiting the vehicle, providing physical support when necessary for safety.

Monitor seating arrangements to maintain appropriate spacing and prevent disruptive interactions among students.

Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus area to ensure cleanliness and operational readiness.

Communicate promptly with the bus driver regarding any safety concerns, delays, or student needs that arise.

Maintain accurate records of student ridership and any incidents that occur during the transport period.

Enforce school policies and bus rules consistently to uphold a culture of respect and responsibility.

Support students with special needs or medical requirements in accordance with established school protocols.

Assist with the management of personal belongings to reduce loss and ensure a tidy passenger area.

Guide students in practicing courteous behavior, reinforcing the school's character education standards daily.

Respond to emergencies calmly and efficiently, following established procedures to protect student welfare.

Collaborate with school staff to address recurring issues and improve the overall transportation experience.

Serve as a visible role model, demonstrating professionalism and care in every interaction with students and families.

Contribute to a positive school climate by ensuring that transportation routines run smoothly and safely each day.

Requirements

Must be at least 21 years of age to ensure maturity and reliability in handling student supervision responsibilities.

Possess a high school diploma or equivalent credential to demonstrate foundational knowledge and communication skills.

Have the legal right to work in the United States, providing documentation that confirms eligibility for employment.

Pass a comprehensive background check to verify a clean record and suitability for working with children.

Be able to pass a drug test as required by school policy to maintain a safe environment for all students.

Demonstrate the physical capability to assist students with mobility or medical needs during loading and unloading.

Show strong communication skills to interact effectively with students, drivers, parents, and school personnel.

Commit to a reliable work schedule that includes early morning and late afternoon shifts on school days.

Be willing to attend periodic training sessions on safety procedures, student management, and emergency protocols.

Adhere to all school policies, including dress code, punctuality, and professional conduct while on duty.

Nice to have

Previous experience working in a school setting or with children in a structured environment.

Familiarity with basic safety and emergency response procedures for student transportation.

Practical notes

Hours are fixed at 6:00am-8:00am and 4:00pm-6:00pm, aligning with the start and end of the school day.

This is a regular part-time position with consistent scheduling throughout the 2025-2026 school year.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required screenings and documentation.

Candidates must be willing to work within the geographic area designated for the Bronx school sites.

No remote or alternative work arrangements are available for this role due to the on-site nature of the position.
